Family Force 5 has arrived
Cornerstone reports: A phoenix rising from the ashes of the Dirty South, Family Force 5 creates a lethal mix of punk, rock, funk and mind-altering grooves that's guaranteed ghetto music straight from the heart cut with a healthy dose of fried grits.

Formed 2 years ago in Atlanta, Family Force 5 re-define Rock from the South, combining OutKast with Rage Against the Machine and beastie Boys with the White Stripes. Imagine Rick James fronting the MC5 or Ronnie Van Zant as lead singer for the Gap Band. No other band mixes new wave guitars with the nasty groove that can only come after a lifetime diet of fried chicken and collard greens. Birth Of Americana
conqueroo reports: HackTone Records and Shout! Factory announce the CD release of Heartworn Highways, the whiskey-warm companion album to the cult documentary of the same name. Recorded in 1975-76 in Nashville and Austin, Heartworn Highways captures the birth of an alt-country movement light-years from the spit-polished Music Row. Armed with little more than a camera and microphone (and maybe a case of Jack), the filmmakers captured lightning in a bottle, spotlighting a particular band of brothers - Steve Earle, Townes Van Zandt, Rodney Crowell, John Hiatt, Guy Clark and perennial outsider David Allan Coe - at the dawn of their careers. They also captured inspired performances from relative unknowns Gamble Rogers and Larry Jon Wilson that will instantly convert listeners into adoring fans. What they walked away with is a document of the fierce, raw talent burning at the core of some of the greatest singer-songwriters of our time. The CD, produced with the direct involvement of the movie's original producer, Graham Leader (In the Bedroom, etc.) and editor, Phillip Schopper, features 20 audio performances recorded for the film, as well as key dialogue excerpts. Editorial: Why I think the WM3 are Innocent: Statistics, Stepdads & Serial Killers
By JoFo: My reading habits last winter managed to creep my kids out, which is an especially impressive feat, given the fact that teenage boys comprise at least some of said kids. Books on serial killers, "perfect" crimes, gruesome murders & their solutions occupied my attention for a few months, for no particular reason. As I read these books, I couldn't help but to think of the West Memphis Three & their unfair trial & unjust conviction. Although none of the books pertained to this case specifically, I managed to glean some understanding on the case from the writings of experts on investigating murders & crime scenes. Crimes Against Music: Six Pence None the Wiser
Day in Rock reports: Welcome to a new feature to the Day in Rock. Every Friday we will highlight a new "crime again music". You may ask what is a crime against music, simply put it is when a classic song is misused (primarily in TV ads to sell crap). This is a heinous crime on many levels. For one there is usually such a disconnect between the original meaning of the song and the crap product being sold that it defied logic. There are a dozen more reasons but we think you can figure them out on your own. In a perfect world we would punish those responsible by locking them in a dark room and subject them to a 24/7 rotation of songs by Kelly Osbourne, Yoko Ono and Courtney Love but since that would probably violate international torture laws, we have decided to call out the companies responsible for their crimes.

We start off with an oldie but a goodie that had previously been highlighted by one of our columnists. The disconnect in this one is pretty funny but also very sad and it has the honor of being a double crime against music. We are talking of course about Six Pence None the Richer's cover of The La's classic "There She Goes". The cover version in itself is humorous because here we have a "Christian" band covering a song supposedly about heroin use. To compound this and why it is the example we use to kick off this series is that this cover was used in advertisements for birth control pills. Yes a Christian band singing a song about heroin that was used to sell birth control pills. You can see how this qualifies as a crime against music and overall good taste! It's just plain wrong on so many levels. The only thing worse would be a tampon company using Pearl Jam's "Even Flow" in an ad. (We better not give them ideas, but we hope Eddie and company would never let their music be degraded at such a level.) We must stop these crimes against music! So join us each week as we call out another company for their crimes.
