. (CMJ) Legendary jazz pianist Alice Coltrane died Friday of respiratory failure at a hospital in West Hills, California. She was 69. Born Alice McLeod, she studied classical and jazz piano early in her life, taking lessons from revolutionary Bud Powell along the way, before she met her most-famous husband, John Coltrane.
