Calico System Say Goodbye to Sucky Music Biz
antiMusic reports: Calico System have realized something; The music business sucks a big one. As a result the band made the painful decision to toss in the towel and let the suits win. Guitarist Rick Giordano issued a statement about the band's demise.

"Well there is no IS really, we already have. Reasons? You want reasons? I don't have to explain myself to you!! But I'll sum it up by saying that it just didn't make sense to remain a band anymore. Music rules, but the music BUSINESS sucks and had taken its toll on all of us.

"A farewell tour will be happening. I can't say when or where yet, but it will happen. We hope to hit a handful of select cities possibly this fall to party with all our friends one last time." He had more to say and you can check that out at- Lambgoat

Cut Off Your Hands Set EP Release
PR reports: Hailing from a land where there are more sheep than people, then venturing Stateside only to be threatened with a legal suit from a Portland, OR based band with the same name. It would seem the odds of making a name for yourself on an international level, both on the street and in the press are somewhat slim.

Cut Off Your Hands (formerly Shaky Hands) however, have defied all reason and pricked the ears of many with their raw riffs and rampant rhythms, their energy comparable to those of Punk popsmiths Klaxons and The Pigeon Detectives, be very excited for these New Zealanders who are about to shake your world with the release of their debut Shaky Hands EP on October 9th (IAMSOUND) and a US tour soon to be announced.- more on this story

Hey Lets Sue Barbers!
Jam reports: The musical free ride is about to end for your local hairdresser or barber shop.

The umbrella group for Canada's music composers is cracking down on thousands of hair salons that don't pay licensing fees for the soothing music they play while you get a trim or dye job.

Anne Richard of the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada (SOCAN) says the law has always required hairdressers and barbers to pay for playing CDs, MP3s or other recordings in public.- more on this story

Ben Harper Adds Dates
antiMusic reports: We told you earlier this week that Ben Harper was going to be taking his show on the road to American theatres in support of the new album Lifeline (in stores Aug 28th). We gave you a ton of dates in a bunch of towns at a bunch of theatres. But one place was curiously absent from the announcement: Los Angeles.

Ben has now rectified that oversight and added not one, but two dates in the graffiti covered city of angels. Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals' two night stand is set to occur at Orpheum Theatre on October 8th and 9th.

We have all of the dates for you, but if you're too far away or just too cheap to buy a ticket you can still catch Ben Harper and The Innocent Criminals on late night TV. They will perform on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno on August 28th, Late Night with Conan O'Brien on September 21st and The Late Show with David Letterman on October 1st.- the promised dates are here

South of the Snooty Fox in August
PR reports: South of the Snooty Fox is the title of the forthcoming album from Sterling Harrison, a veteran soul singer whose approach is the very definition of the term "old school." The album will be released August 21 by HackTone Records, distributed through Rhino/ADA.

South of the Snooty Fox describes an actual geographical location in the inner city as well as serving for a metaphor for the plight of a gifted artist whose professional life was, for the most part, spent out of the spotlight of the mainstream music business. Accordingly, The L.A. Weekly headlined a piece on Harrison "The Best Soul Singer You Never Heard Of."- more on this story

Wattstax Reissue
PR reports: In the summer of 1972, Stax Records had an idea that was larger than life. Stax's co-owner, Al Bell, had wanted to expand the soul label's West Coast presence and develop its Stax Films arm. The ideal way to do both was to stage the biggest soul concert in history termed by one former staff member "the black Woodstock" right in the center of South Central Los Angeles, a vast portion of which had been destroyed by fire in the Watts Riots. The concert, called Wattstax, proved a crowning moment for Stax as 112,000 people united at the Los Angeles Coliseum in a spirit of joy, pride and celebration. The resultant movie was a blockbuster and plays to this date in many music film festivals. And now the original two-LP soundtrack has been expanded to three CDs, including material from the original Wattstax album (which sold seven million copies in the SoundScan era alone) as well as from its sequel, Wattstax: The Living Word, along with samplings from Wattstax-related individual artist albums released in 1972-73.

On August 28, Stax Records reactivated by new owner Concord Music Group will release the first domestic reissue of the complete Wattstax soundtrack, housed in a collectible Digipack featuring rare photographs and reproductions of vintage Wattstax-era posters. The package also contains a multi-page booklet on the story of Wattstax by noted soul music historian Rob Bowman. List price is $24.98. Digitally remastered from the original tapes, the package is one of the highlights of Stax's 50th anniversary celebration, which has also featured live concerts, a film to be premiered on PBS, a film festival and an array of reissues and DVDs.- find out who is included
