Mike Mangione Week: Day 5
antiMusic reports: We continue our look at outstanding artists this week with Mike Mangione. This critically acclaimed Midwestern singer/songwriter's latest new album "Tenebrae" is getting a wide release this week and we caught up with Mike to tell us a little bit about his favorite tracks from the album. Here he is with today's song:

Waiting For No One: I wrote this one night sitting on my couch in Milwaukee. Most songs take a couple of days, or weeks to write. I never force the process, if it comes great, if it does not that's fine too. This song came to me and fast. It's about the balance between being frustrated with where you are and realizing you need to be thankful for what you got and receptive to it. Hanging in between those two places of frustration and receptivity is where this song lives. "You can stay, detained by your questions or come living with me" is in reference to our call to face this reality and fess up to it.

This was recorded with the band all facing each other playing, this is all live. When we got a good take, we listened back and found that everything was great, no need to overdub. This is Duane, the producer's favorite. Karl Dietel who played with The Samples has amazing keyboard work on this.

Hearing is believing so preview some songs from the album, learn more about Mike, grab tour dates and more right - here.

Velvet Revolver Deny Singer Selection
Billboard reports: Contrary to reports suggesting former Spacehog frontman Royston Langdon is in line to become the new singer of Velvet Revolver, the band is still making up its mind about who will replace Scott Weiland.

Bassist Duff McKagan tells Billboard.com that although Velvet Revolver did play with Langdon and that "he's f*cking awesome, at this point I'd have to say no" on him becoming the new singer.

"We just have to make sure it's the right guy," he says, adding that Weiland's angry departure from the band this spring has brought him closer to group members Slash, Matt Sorum and Dave Kushner. "Karmically, we deserve the right guy. It's a tough thing, man. We make a pretty big noise." - more on this story

Dead Kennedys Lose Another Founding Member
PR reports: Dead Kennedys founding member Klaus Flouride announced today that he is stepping down as a performing member of the legendary Bay Area-based punk band after more than thirty years.

Due to a reoccurring medical condition, Klaus Flouride has decided that the rigors of touring and the demands of the band were the determining factors in making this difficult decision. Flouride will continue to perform regionally with bands like The American Professionals, The Go Going Gone Girls Band, The Legendary Stardust Cowboy among others but the road has become a grind that is counterproductive to his health.

"Over the past thirty years, I have had the great fortune to have been a founding member of Dead Kennedys," said Klaus Flouride. "It's been tough at times but particularly rewarding working and collaborating with men like Biafra, 6025, D.H., Brandon, Jeff, Ted, Dave, Steve, Skip and especially Ray. However a recurring medical condition called Angioedema has caused me to make the difficult decision to begin withdraw from the road and as a touring member of Dead Kennedys. Thus I have taken my leave as a performing member of the band for the foreseeable future. That said, I am not retiring from music."

Will Metallica Be Masters Again?
antiMusic reports: "If we start writing songs for our fans, something's gone wrong," Metallica frontman James Hetfield told MTV News. We could leave it at that and join a lot in the mainstream media (CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS, Fox, etc, etc)in the practice of lifting quotes way out of context to further some kind of agenda, but he was saying that in a certain context. That line was proceeded by "The last thing I want is someone to think, 'Oh, they had to go back to Puppets because that was the best album, and they're doing it because we want it.'"

And he took it further, "The fans may think they know best, but hey, I'm the armchair quarterback when I'm watching my team too. At the end of the day, we have to write it because we love it and it's coming from our heart. That's why people connect with it. If you start doing it for the fans, you've lost the plot."

But is the band really going back to the classic Puppets sound on the new album as Lars has said? Going by what James says in this interview, the answer is yes and it sounds like it was producer Rick Rubin who helped them return to their metal roots after spending years being led down a softer path by Bob Rock.

Broken Bones Won't Stop Alice Cooper
Kayos reports: While filming a promotional film on July 29 for Alice Cooper's new "Along Came A Spider" (SPV) album at Linda Vista Hospital, an abandoned facility in East L.A., a 5.4 earthquake shook Los Angeles to its very core. He happened to be choking a nurse at the time. The 5.4 quake was the strongest since the devastating 1994 Northridge quake, shaking Alice, the band, and everyone on the set (including director Piggy D) into a stunned silence. The epicenter was in nearby Chino Hills.

"The floor started moving. Whoa, this is more powerful than I thought! I hope they keep it! You can't get special effects like that," enthused Cooper, who had just wrapped production on the film that features lengthy portionsup to two minutes eachof "Vengeance Is Mine," (In Touch With) Your Feminine Side" and "Killed By Love," all from the new album.

The current "Psycho-Drama" tourapproximately 100 shows from July 5 to December 4is still as physical as ever. In Redmond, Oregon last week, fans watched fascinated as Alice took a violent fall. Few noticed just how crushing the thud was. Most figured it was part of the show. Alice, hurting, continued with the performance and with a few performances after that, negating any suggestions to get himself checked out. Finally, giving in to those whose job it is to keep him healthy, he learned he had broken a rib and suffered ligament damage. Doctors advised him it would take three weeks of inactivity and rest to fully recover.

Fat chance. Cooper continues on tour, unrestrained. - grab the dates here

The Clash Live at Shea Stadium Details
Sony reports: Recorded at New York's Shea Stadium in 1982, Live at Shea Stadium, released on October 7th,captures the band at the peak of its powers and on devastating form. Bristling with energy and attitude, Live at Shea Stadium is destined to feature alongside James Brown at the Apollo, The Who at Leeds and Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison as one of the greatest live recordings of all time.

The Clash, opening for The Who on their farewell tour of the US, played two nights at the legendary Shea Stadium (12th & 13th Oct 1982). They had recently released the Combat Rock album, and the singles "Rock The Casbah" and "Should I Stay Or Should I Go" were enjoying mass audiences via MTV and radio airplay. Despite being the support act, the New York Post reported "there were as many Clash fans on those nights as Who fans."

The Clash released their fifth album 'Combat Rock' prior to the US tour. The album contained the single 'Should I Stay or Should I Go', which received heavy airplay in the US. The following single, 'Rock the Casbah' was a Top 40 hit in the US, with heavy rotation on MTV. Original Clash drummer Terry Chimes, who appeared on the band's eponymously-titled debut album, plays on 'Live at Shea Stadium'. - more on this story

The Inevitable KISS Pez Dispensers
antiMusic reports: What took them so long? They have condoms and coffins but if any band was just crying out be made into Pez dispensers, it's KISS. The wait is now over.

You can now enjoy your Pez candy and line Gene's pockets at the very same time! Does he really need the cash? Maybe not, but it could help him pay for better writers for his "reality" show.

But don't get all excited just yet, these are a bit of a rip off. You won't get actual classic Pez heads made to resemble the likeness of the original KISS members. You'll get generic orange caps on regular plastic dispensers with what look like stickers on them containing KISS album art.

Check out the cheap looking Pez heads - here and also get a load of Paul's "art".

Dave Koz Hits Packaged
PR reports: Capitol Records will release Dave Koz Greatest Hits on September 16th. It's a fitting time for a career retrospective of the renowned instrumentalist/composer, with the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce recently announcing that Koz will be honored with a star in the sidewalk on Hollywood Boulevard's Walk of Fame in 2009. Dave has had numerous No. 1 singles and No. 1 albums and been honored with six GRAMMY nominations.

Although Dave Koz - Greatest Hits is packed with Koz classics, documenting a career with incredible longevity and diversity, it also provides a sneak preview of Dave's next chapter with four brand new compositions. "Life In The Fast Lane," the first single, was most added for three consecutive weeks and is already at No. 12 on the charts. "I wrote it with Darren Rahn, one of the great up-and-coming writer/producers of today, and it reminds me of the pace my life has taken over the past 18 years," says Dave. "It certainly feels like I've been traveling in the fast lane and absolutely enjoying every bit of the ride."

"And Then I Knew," another new song, was produced by his friend Rob Cavallo (Green Day, My Chemical Romance, Alanis Morissette). Although the two have known each other since second grade, this marks the first time the GRAMMY-winning producer has produced one of Dave's songs and his first time producing an instrumental artist. Other new tunes include "I Can" featuring BeBe Winans and "Bada Bing" featuring Jeff Golub. - more on this story

All Shall Perish in September
PR reports: Oakland deathcore demigods All Shall Perish are set to release the highly-anticipated follow up to 2006's metal milestone The Price of Existence on September 16th via Nuclear Blast Records.

Entitled Awaken the Dreamers, the band's third proper full-length further blurs the boundaries between technical grind, relentless death, and balls-to-the-wall metalcore. The furious twelve-track collection was once again recorded at Oakland's Castle Ultimate with Zack Ohren (Decrepit Birth, Light This City). Drummer Matt Kuykendall is mighty proud of the result:

"We have never been a band to write the same record twice and we have never enjoyed records that are 1 single and 11 worse versions of the same song. This record is the most diverse thing we have done to date. Every song is different and brings something new to the overall experience of the CD. When you look back to all the classic records of our time, they are full of all kinds of different songs. Vulgar Display of Power just wouldn't be the same without 'This Love' and 'Hollow'. Our record is a breath of fresh air in a scene that is turning stale." - more on this story

We Are Scientists Join Kings of Leon Tour
PR reports: We Are Scientists are freaking out like a group of 8 year-old boys who've caught a snake in a box, and the reason is that they got the Kings of Leon tour this fall.

W.A.S. will spend five weeks in October and November supporting the Southern Rock icons in a slew of American cities that includes Milwaukee.

Until then, New Yorkers Keith Murray (guitar, lead vocals) and Chris Cain (bass, receded reverby vocals), along with stage mates Max Hart (keys, shrieks) and Adam Aaronson (drums, haircut), will bring their hook-heavy, chop-confident second album, Brain Thrust Mastery, back to Europe for a late-summer seven-country swing that will include the U.K., where the album debuted at No. 11, and a jaunt supporting R.E.M. in Italy, Germany, Lithuania, and Spain. Early October and an airplane will take the grown-men-without-jobs to Australia for a week of headliners before they literally double their skymile take by flying back home to join Kings of Leon. - more on this story

Ludo Warped Tour Diary: 7/29/08 - Post-Gazette Pavilion at Star Lake (Burgettstown, PA)
antiMusic reports: Ludo will be checking in with us all summer as they rock the Warped tour in support of their Island Def Jam CD "You're Awful, I Love You". Here is the band with the latest entry:

Hello, Pittsburgh! Early Tuesday, we found out our gear was getting kicked off the truck. Not enough room. Also, found out we were going to be the last band of the day. Nice. Headlining Warped. (<---that's a joke) Nice. Did an interview that afternoon. Loaded in down a large hill (we would load out UP a large hill). Watched some great bands all day. Eventually made our way over to the Hurley.com Stage with our equipments. Did a signing around 6:00 or so. Then for our show... we were the last band to start and for 15 minutes, all of Warped Tour had to listen to Ludo. It was fun. Lots more people watched our set than I thought would. Byron had already torn merch down though because it's not fun to try to count shirts out in the dark. So no parade. But we sold CD's from the stage and met everyone who was good enough to stick around. Had to schlep most of our gear back to the trailer. It was only about a quarter mile uphill. And the sick thing is, we never would have known how bad it sucked to load all our equipment from the parking lot had they not offered to put us on the truck in the first place. Back to the bus we roamed. Jim drove it west.

Find out where you can see them, preview tracks from their new CD and learn more about Ludo right here
