Metal Underground reports: Music equipment is everything to a rock band. But one Dallas band has felt the sting of having its equipment stolen not once, but twice in one month. "We always joke that DROWNING POOL has a black cloud that follows us," said Mike Luce, the band's drummer. The holidays have been anything but happy for the alternative-metal band. On the day before Thanksgiving, cameras caught thieves stealing the band's amplifiers and other valuable sound equipment. "I think someone has a target aimed right at us. We're in the crosshairs," said bassist Stevie Benton.
Convinced that the thieves focused on them alone, DROWNING POOL moved the rest of their gear from a rehearsal studio in North Dallas to Public Storage just a block away. But as bad luck would have it, lighting would strike twice exactly one month later.
"I got here and saw it was cut, and then I opened the door up and literally started crying," said guitarist C.J. Pierce.

Gigwise reports: All pubs and clubs in the Berkshire town of Reading could be forced to ban 'Gangsta Rap' from their venues following a spate of violence in the early hours of New Year's Day. A massive brawl involving around 20 people spilled out onto the street outside the Caf du Sport venue into the town, with a 24-year-old man suffering serious damage to his head from a glass bottle.
Town inspector John Relph is meeting up the club manager and will discuss whether the music inside in the venue had any impact on spurring the violence. PR reports: Lightning Rod Records will release singer/songwriter James McMurtry's new CD, titled Just Us Kids, on April 15, 2008. McMurtry's ninth album, which features 12 new songs, is a follow-up to 2005's critically acclaimed and award-winning project, Childish Things.
McMurtry has long been known as fine storyteller, but he has lately received nationwide attention for his role as a musical activist. On Just Us Kids, McMurtry picks up where he left off with his controversial anthem "We Can't Make It Here." On "Cheney's Toy," McMurtry once again reminds us that the war in Iraq is still going on, with veiled references to Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib and the stark image of a soldier who returned from the conflict, blind and brain damaged. The lyrics of "God Bless America" call out the corporate profiteering and cronyism of the heads of state who led the country to war. McMurtry's songs introduce the listener to characters that exist on the fringes of society. Drug addicts, murderers, crooked politicians, and other unsavory folks all play a part on Just Us Kids.
