A recap of the this week's Day in Rock stories

Top 5 stories for first half this week

Are Britney Spears and Ryan Seacrest More Important Than Led Zeppelin?
antiMusic reports: There is something seriously wrong in the universe. Britney Spears and Ryan Seacrest have both purchased stars on The Hollywood Walk of Fame but legitimate legends like Led Zeppelin are no where to be found there. One California Zeppelin fan is hoping to change that.

Rocky Dickerson of Chico, California launched a new website ledzeppelinstar.com to help Led Zeppelin to get the recognition they deserve. The statement on the site says "We are starting a campaign to get Led Zeppelin a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Letters have been sent to the group and their management requesting written approval to begin the drive.

"Contact has been made with the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, and they have supplied all the information needed. Please sign the online petition and keep your fingers crossed!"

We've not sure how much a petition will help the effort since these stars usually come down to money but it can't hurt. Rocky says in his mission statement that his "goal is to honor [Led Zeppelin] with a star in a completely fan-driven campaign." So you can do your part by checking out the site and signing the petition - here!

Metallica's Golden Weekend
antiMusic reports: There is definite excitement in the rock world over the release of Metallica's new album "Death Magnetic," in fact you can say the band had a "golden" weekend with predictions that the effort will reach gold status within the first few days of the album hitting stores. But that isn't the only Metallica news from this past weekend. Here are some highlights:

Blabbermouth reported on Saturday: Metallica's "Death Magnetic" is on track to sell around 500,000 copies in its first, shortened week on the streets, according to sources cited by Hits Daily Double, the companion web site of music industry tip sheet HITS. more

Meanwhile, they are making noise outside of record stores. BW&BK reports that Metallica's ninth studio album, Death Magnetic, came out Friday and is already a record setter in one aspect. Last week's FMQB radio broadcast, The World Premiere of Death Magnetic, was heard on 175+ stations across the United States and Canada, setting a new bar for clearance levels of an FMQB Productions event.more

Metallica's European record label Universal Music cancelled the band's interview with the Swedish newspaper Sydsvenskan last week after one of the paper's writers admitted in his review of Metallica's new album that he illegally downloaded an alternate version of the CD via the Internet.

Also on the Euro front: Metallica's new album, "Death Magnetic" has entered the UK chart at position No. 1 ahead of Scottish band GLASVEGAS' self-titled debut, which came in at No. 2. The original release date for "Death Magnetic" was last Friday (September 12). However, the METALLICA album was released early, with shops selling copies on Wednesday (September 10). more

Empty Box? Fans who purchase the UK pressed box set edition of METALLICA's "Death Magnetic" album may discover that there is no sound. That is because they forgot to put in the CD. They also forgot something else more

Last but not least, Blabbermouth has a whole series of "making of" videos posted containing clips from the album's recording sessions. View those - here

Bob Mould Plans Autobiography
PR reports: Bob Mould, founder of the pioneering American punk band Husker Du, will write his memoir for publication in autumn 2010. Michael Azerrad, author of the bestselling Our Band Could Be Your Life and Come As You Are: The Story of Nirvana will collaborate with Mould to tell the full story of his blazing, era-defining life and career.

Guitarist, singer, and songwriter Bob Mould founded the trio Hsker D in Minneapolis in 1979, powerfully reshaping America's rock scene. Hsker D LPs like Zen Arcade and New Day Rising won over critics and fans by welding melodicism, tenderness, and literary seriousness to punk's rage, volume, and speed. Influenced by the Ramones, the Beatles, and classics like "Eight Miles High," their cover of which was a college radio hit, Hsker D created new classics of rage and alienation like "Celebrated Summer," "Makes No Sense At All," and "Hardly Getting Over It." Determined to create music that mattered both artistically and politically, they released eight albums in seven years and toured relentlessly before drug addictions, a suicide, and artistic and personal differences led to the band's implosion in 1988.

The memoir will, for the first time ever, delve deeply into Mould's life as a musician and his experiences with Hsker D, as a solo artist, and in his most commercially viable and successful work as leader of '90s indie rock kingpins Sugar.

Gemma Hayes Lines Up Dates with Joe Jackson and My Bloody Valentine
PR reports: Irish singer/songwriter Gemma Hayes announced several upcoming U.S. tour dates today in support of her latest album, "The Hollow of Morning," which will be released on September 30 on Second Motion Records. Hayes will perform with Joe Jackson on select tour dates, accompanying the veteran performer at venues including the Warfield Theater in San Francisco and The Grove of Anaheim. Gemma will also open two sold-out shows for My Bloody Valentine at the Santa Monica Civic Center on October 1 and 2.

Gemma will perform songs off her latest album, which has already generated great buzz including Chromewaves hailing Hayes' song, "Out of Our Hands," as a "moment of glorious sonic oblivion." My Bloody Valentine's Kevin Shields contributes guitar on two tracks, including the current single, "Out of Our Hands," and the hauntingly melodic, "In over My Head." Wired echoed similar sentiments on their "Listening Post" blog by adding that, "the legendary guitarist's jagged chops on "Out of Our Hands" counter pose nicely with Gemma Hayes."' The album was co-produced by long-time collaborator David Odlum, who worked on Hayes' Mercury nominated debut, Night on My Side.

Hawksley Workman Mini Tour
PR reports: Interesting way to announce a tour by not mentioning it beyond the subject heading but here is what we were sent: His second album in eight months, Juno-winning Hawksley Workman releases a power-packed follow up to Between the Beautifuls, with Los Manlicious.

Originally intended as the rock-edged follow-up to 2005's gentle Treeful of Starling, Los Manlicious is a gritty underbelly with an itch to be scratched. Its dark places are shining examples of his artistry, and its soft spots are all the hard facts you need to cut a rug with.

January's release, Between the Beautifuls, spawned massive tours in both Canada and Europe, where Hawksley sold out bigger and better venues across the country including two magical nights at Danforth Music Hall. - dates

Portugal. The Man Week: Day 1
antiMusic reports: Alaska rocker's Portugal. The Man are turning out to be one of the hardest working bands in show business, releasing a new album every year since their debut in 2006. They return to record stores this week with their third album 'Censored Colors,' which promises to take them from underground heroes to the mainstream of the rock world with their incredible sound which takes us back to the day when it was "the music stupid" and not just image that made rockstars. To celebrate the release we asked the band's newest member Ryan Neighbors to pick his favorite tracks from the album and tell us a little bit about each one. Here is Ryan with today's song:

All Mine - Recording "All Mine" was awesome because we have never done anything acapella before. It forced us to not just sing whatever came to mind but really search for solid melodies and harmonies that could stand on their own without other instruments. Phil and Kirk added some great harmonies as well. Phil has some mean highs there.

When we first started working on the song "All Mine" was with an acoustic but John had the idea to do it acapella and everyone agreed. We put some snaps on the chorus to up the mood a bit. I have always personally enjoyed vocal music and I enjoy this song.

Wanna hear what it's all about? You can do that plus grab tour dates, learn more about the band and their new album and more - right here!
