Jay & the Americans Complete United Artists Singles collection
conqueroo reports: Jay & the Americans' roots were steeped in New York doo-wop, yet they managed to adapt their sound to compete in the British Invasion-steeped '60s. The group's long complex saga (for starters there have been three "Jay"s) is traced on the forthcoming The Complete United Artists Singles collection, a deluxe 3-CD, 66-track package coming from Collectors' Choice Music on July 21, 2009.

The package contains all of their UA singles (both "A" and "B" sides) in the original mono mixes the way fans heard it on the radio in the 1960s plus two promo-only tracks. All the hits are here, including "This Magic Moment," "Come a Little Bit Closer" Cara, Mia" "Let's Lock the Door (And Throw Away the Key)," "Sunday and Me," "This magic Moment," "She Cried," "Walking in the Rain" and more. Producer Ed Osborne (who helmed Collectors' Choice's recent Jan & Dean, Tommy James & the Shondells and Gary Lewis & the Playboys sets), contributed extensive biographical notes utilizing revealing quotes from members Sandy Deanne, Marty Sanders, Kenny Vance, Howie Kane, and Jay Traynor, and record producers Mike Stoller and Gerry Granahan.

The group's story began with a audition for legendary producers Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller in 1961. Hot off their success with The Coasters and The Drifters, the pair dubbed the group "The Americans" and signed them to United Artists. The first recording was "Tonight" from UA's forthcoming movie release West Side Story. When member Jay Traynor's voice emerged most dominant, Lieber & Stoller added "Jay &" to the Americans' handle. The disc sold 50,000 not bad for a first outing. A subsequent single, "She Cried," to which Leiber & Stoller added the voices of Cissy and Thelma Houston, and Dee Dee Warwick, went to #5 following a stint on American Bandstand. Soon after, however, the group found itself without a lead singer when Jay Traynor left to get a "real" job.

Wreckless Eric & Amy Rigby Tour
PR reports: The dynamic duo of Wreckless Eric & Amy Rigby will be touring the U.S. in celebration of their most recent release, their debut release.

Their U.S. tour starts July 7 in Pittsburgh, PA and ends July 28 in Cleveland, OH. The pair are currently working on their second joint project, an as-yet-unnamed album of covers

Since then he has made countless albums in different guises, moving between bubblegum pop, grunge, psychedelic and techno but always remaining true to the DIY spirit of his early Stiff days. His last, Bungalow Hi, released in 2004 was described by Andrew Weatherall as sounding 'like Bo Diddley trying to outdo Aphex Twin'. - more on this story

Trevor Hall Hitting the Road
KP reports: Trevor Hall's self-titled Vanguard debut, produced by Marshall Altman (Matt Nathanson, Kate Voegele, Marc Broussard), embodies a soulfulness, depth and passion far beyond his 22 years. Trevor combines a unique musical mix of reggae and acoustic rock that serves as a landscape for his thought-provoking, inspiring lyrics. Out July 28th, he is hitting the road next week.

This old soul infuses his songs with a deep sense of spirituality, as evidenced in the lead single "Unity," written and performed with his friend Matisyahu. The two artists were on tour together when news of the Mumbai terrorist attacks hit the media. Trevor had made two trips to India, one a pilgrimage with two monks from a Southern California temple (whom he continues to live with), the second on his own in celebration of his 21st birthday. But the sectarian violence hit close to home for Matisyahu, who knew some of those who'd been murdered in a synagogue that had been targeted by the terrorists.

"We read about it, talked about it, meditated about it, and we started writing lyrics back and forth," Trevor recalls. "On the external level, it's obviously about the unity of all beliefs. We call it by many names, but there's only one truth. But on a much deeper, internal level, it's about the mystical place in your own heart where all these things merge into one thing. So the song works both ways." - more on this story
