Royal & the Serpent is back with a brand new single entitled "Death Do Us Part". It marks the genre disruptor's very first release of 2025, and it also heralds the beginning of her next sonic era, paving the way for the arrival of her anxiously awaited debut album later this year.
A glitchy hum opens the song, catalyzing her return on "Death Do Us Part." The vocals practically hover above icy keys and strains of feedback. The mood shifts as acoustic guitar snakes through a percussive groove. Emotion and energy eventually overflow from a gorgeously gothic refrain, "I'll die in your arms. We'll turn into daisies. Yeah, we'll turn into stars. And they'll call us crazy, baby. I'll follow you into the dark...'Til death do us part." Fittingly, a wave of thick distortion carries her final words off into the darkness. (continue)

An exhilarating statement of self-reliance and unshakable confidence, Fish brings her signature "bold and expressive" (NPR, World Cafe) flair to the new song. "I'm Done Runnin'" opens with sublimely moody riffs, fueled by her extraordinary vocal power and emotionality: "When I look in the mirror, staring at the unknown / The world's not getting clearer, but I like where I'm goin,'" she sings. "It's about pushing forward even when life knocks you down, because you know what you want," Fish explains. (continue)
How's this for a surprising musical coincidence: Frank Sinatra cut his version of "New York, New York" within weeks of the Clash recording "London Calling" in 1979. That nearly simultaneous expression of optimistic striving and dystopic modernity is the jumping-off point for London Calling New York New York, a tale of two cities and two songs that came to exemplify them. The book is out now.
Peter Silverton, the veteran English author and journalist who died in 2023, did numerous interviews and in-depth research to dig deep into the history and impact of the two songs on their respective cities. Combining musical scholarship, cultural analysis and personal memoir, London Calling New York New York is rich with wit, fascinating detail, and scholarly insight. (continue)
