Studios May Compromise On Screener Ban

The great screener controversy of 2003 may be heading for a compromise. Directors, actors and independent film makers made an uproar when the MPAA announce that in order to curb piracy they would not being issuing screener videos and DVD this year to voting members of the Academy. (see story)

Inpendent film makers cried foul since the ban would leave a lot of them out of Oscar contention.

It now looks like the MPAA is willing to compromise. MPAA president Jack Valenti held a teleconference yesterday(Oct 16) with the heads of the major studios to discuss the issue and there are indications that they are willing to compromise.

However, just what that compromise would entail is not yet known, if it has been worked out at all. One idea being tossed around is that screener videos for films that received a limited release would be issued but members would have to see larger released feature films in theatres.  .
