Spacey reported to police early Saturday morning that he was mugged while walking his dog 4.30am in a London park off St George's Rd. But he later came clean on BBC radio telling listeners that he was conned by a young man with a sob story that convinced Spacey to turn over his cell phone so that he could call his mother. Once he had the phone in hand he took off, Spacey gave chase but tripped over his dog and hit his head on the pavement.
"What actually happened is, I fell for a con and I was incredibly embarrassed by it. Some sob story about somebody needing to call their mother and could they use my phone. It was such a good con I dialed the number myself and when somebody answered I handed [over] my phone. This kid took off and I was so upset I ran after him. I tripped up over my dog and ended up falling on to the street and hitting my head.
"And now I'm bleeding relatively profusely. I'm extremely upset. I feel like the biggest fool that has ever lived. I march over to the police station and say I got mugged. And I'm thinking they are going to run over and find this kid a block later. They take me to the hospital and they were very kind.
"I woke up after a couple of hours' sleep and I thought, 'There is a difference between assault and theft' and it just wasn't on for me to not come clean about my own level of embarrassment and being humble at the fact that I got taken by the oldest con going."
Soon after the incident was reported to police by Spacey as a mugging some press reports surfaced claiming that he had been "brutally mugged" and a violently "beaten" in an attack. Spacey went back to police and set the record straight and then went on the BCC to set the public record straight.
Keyser Soze would probably had someone
else walk his dog at 4:00 a.m. and killed who ever conned him but life
does not always imitate art.
