"The world is a better place for people who come into contact with our brand of entertainment," said Ks guitarist Ray Beyda. "There are too many slick bands with no soul, and far, far too many bands with lots of heart but lacking the skill to make coherent music. We cohere around the heart. The world needs us, so we're flying our flag."
The band announced their existence at a packed and raucous press conference held at Woody McHale's Bar & Grill. The event was called Charm Offensive I. Clearly intrigued members of the entertainment press grilled members of the band regarding their style and creative intentions; the band replied with cryptic and cagey answers but promised more information in an ongoing promotion, Charm Offensive I being the first salvo, to be known as Hype Offensive I. The band will coin a new music genre name to fit their unique sound and write an entertainment manifesto, in addition to making more mysterious announcements. The press will have to wait and see.
The Ks are a sprawling assemblage of musicians that still rock like a small band. Banishing various players from the stage for sections of the set, they actually become small and then become huge, when the raw-Ks are joined by the sterling hon-K orchestra, the K-board and the chi-K singers. They've employed programs, flowers, actors and cardboard flames to add to the theatricality of their shows. "We've been putting on these killer shows for all our friends," said the tenor sax player, aptly named Marty Sachs, "but no one outside our own circles even knows we exist. We have to announce our existence."
And exist they do. Will this announcement spread the word? The next opportunity to find out is Thursday, April 27 10:00 p.m. at the New York institution The Knitting Factory (www.knittingfactory.com) The Knitting Factory is located at 74 Leonard.
