About the Raven's Heart Foundation:

Born August 26, 2004 Raven's little life was tough; she was born with a very large hole in between the right and left pumping chambers of her heart. Her condition, Ventricular Septal Defect. Large holes cause problems, as the pressure in the right side of the heart decreases, blood will start to flow to the path of least resistance. This leads to congestive heart failure and must be treated. The most important sign of congestive heart failure is the baby's growth. Babies who have significant congestive heart failure will have failure to thrive and will have difficulty maintaining a normal weight gain in the first few months of life. Such was Raven's case, at birth she weighed 7 lbs. 7 oz. At 2 months old she struggled with every swallow; she was often fed with a medicine dropper and her mother anticipated the usual vomiting that followed. Raven reached 8 lbs. and was on numerous medications to try and prolong her life. Raven needed immediate emergency open heart surgery on November 11, 2004. Surgeons stopped her heart in order to repair it, using a heart-lung machine to keep her alive while they worked. Some children may require a pace maker for the rest of their life if the stitching through their heart interrupts the normal electric current.

Large ventricular septal defects cause two problems if left unrepaired. Infants who have poor growth due to congestive heart failure can have poor brain growth during the first few years of life. This is the time of most rapid brain development; therefore good nutrition is important for the development of the baby. In addition, babies with congestive heart failure are at higher risk for infections, particularly lung infections. If they do get a lung infection, they may not tolerate it as well as other babies and can become very sick with even a simple winter cold. The pressures in the lungs can become so high that blue blood from the right ventricle will flow across the ventricular septal defect into the left ventricle and mix with red blood. The infant will then have less oxygen going to the rest of the body and will start to develop cyanosis. The high pressures in the lungs can initially be reversed, but with time will become irreversible.

As adults, these patients have no other option but a heart-lung transplant.

Raven's first surgery was a success and she continues to grow and gain strength!!

When your child is diagnosed with heart disease, you may feel that your hopes and dreams have been shattered. Feeling helpless, frightened, and even guilty are common emotions that parents experience. You need a place to turn and you want answers and experiences of other families to help you understand. With the help of numerous, wonderful people, Raven's mom Misse, formed Raven's Heart Foundation. This foundation was put in place to help children and families of children with heart illness.Raven's Heart Foundation is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charitable organization, and is not affiliated with any one medical institution or organization. Many beautiful people have and continue to donate themselves and their talents in support of those in need. You can help with your tax deductible donation.
