The Day Metallica Came To Church
. The pitch for the book asks, "What do the music of Metallica and Bach, the film Crash, and stories about Batman have in common? According to author and pastor John Van Sloten, God can speak through all of themif we're listening." He goes into a bit more detail in a new feature with the Calgary Sun. He apparently almost lost his church by using Metallica and other popular culture themes to reach his parishioners. "They thought I was going too far, throwing out the bible completely," said Van Sloten, 49, pastor of New Hope Church. "In most other denominations, I'd be defrocked." The big problem with the book's title is the fact that Metallica never really came to church. They had church brought to them. According to The Sun's feature, "In 2004, he told his flock of how heavy metal band Metallica's music embodied God's message of conquering injustice. The band was playing a concert in Calgary at the time and, fascinated when told of the sermon but unable to attend, had a video crew record it." - Read the Sun's feature here Preview and Purchase Metallica CDs |
