David Crosby's Brush With Death
. The one-time Byrd was riding his 1987 Harley-Davidson along a winding stretch of road in the hills when he lost control of his motorcycle and slid for more than 40 feet. Crosby recovered but the accident was just one of a series of setbacks that threatened to destroy the CSNY star in the '80s and '90s. By the mid-1980s, Crosby's casual '60s drug use had turned into hardcore addiction. He was freebasing cocaine daily, addicted to heroin and was arrested several times on assorted drug and weapons charges. In 1982, he had to be pulled from his vehicle after driving into concrete on a freeway and rescuers found cocaine and a .45 automatic gun. He began a pattern of arrests followed by rehab, which he typically skipped out on. After walking away from rehab one time too many, Crosby was sent to Texas State Prison in Huntsville, where he was kept captive for nine months. That shock to the system resulted in Crosby turning his life around and telling all in an excellent confessional autobiography, Long Time Gone. - more on this story Gibson.com is an official news provider for the Day in Rock.
