(Gibson) A new film, LENNONNYC, will be shown Saturday in New York's Central Park to celebrate what would have been John Lennon's 70th birthday. According to Spinner.com, the movie will then be shown on November 22 on PBS, as part of the American Masters series.

The movie, which depicts Lennon's time in New York City, was produced and directed by Michael Epstein. "I had always thought of John as a New Yorker," he said. "He kind of embodied for me New York. I felt that with his 70th birthday coming up that New York was the right lens to use to look at his life, to look at his solo life. I didn't want to go back and unpack The Beatles again because it had been done a billion times and I don't think there's anything fresh to mine in there."

LENNONNYC features footage of Lennon in the '70s and focuses on his solo career, political activism, relationship with Yoko Ono, "Lost Weekend" phase and time raising son Sean. It also features interviews with producer Jack Douglas, Elton John and photographer Bob Gruen, who shot the famous photo of Lennon in his New York City shirt. - more on this story
