BW&BK ran a story early this morning with the headline Professional Classical Singer Analyzes Bruce Dickinson, Ronnie James Dio, King Diamond, Ozzy Osbourne and Rob Halford. Of course we clicked over to check it out! It was an excerpt from an Invisible Oranges feature where they asked classically-trained, New York-based voice teacher Claudia Friedlander to give her opinion of five heavy metal singers. BW&BK singled out Dio and King Diamond, who both got high marks, but we decided to focus on Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson and Ozzy Osbourne.

Here is an excerpt of her comments' about Dickinson: "I have nothing but admiration for this singer. Listen how he starts off with a soft growl, then moves seamlessly into a well-supported, sustained high full-voice sound that then evolves into an effortless long scream! His diction is easily intelligible, regardless of the range he's singing in or the effect he's going for."

She went on to praise Ronnie James Dio, even compared him to Freddie Mercury but she had quite a different take on the man he replaced in Black Sabbath. Her reaction to Ozzy Osbourne is classic. She said in part, "It hurt my throat so much to listen to him that I was tempted to ask Cosmo how long his career lasted before he either washed out or needed surgery."
