Singled Out: Novi's Blackbirds
. I was up in my bedroom, having an eventful Friday evening doodling around on garage band and drinking red wine. I couldn't help but feel this overwhelming sense of nostalgia for my Hometown Ashland, Oregon. I missed the simplicity of life, the ease of just being so unobligated, the bonfires and the woods and all the free spirits. I randomly started singing "I seen blackbirds F*****', on the side of the road." I was tickled at my own randomness and realized I had a hook. My roomate was downstairs with some gals, and I heard them all start to laugh, as I sang. It sort of fueled the fire, and the lyrics just poured out. I laughed my way through it. The whole thing, took about 20 minutes. I sent it to my producer, totally as a joke, and he thought it was hilarious. Then he woke up singing the hook, and called me right away. I was amazed that he genuinely wanted to put some production behind it. Bewildered as I was, something did feel very right about it. It spawned a whole new realm of pizzazz in my songwriting and music in general. I want to write songs that get a rise out of people, in one way or another, the avenues of creation are endless. There are just so many ways to deliver a message, and Humor is by far my favorite one. Silly as it is, may be the most honest song I've ever written... Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album right here!
