Lauryn Hill Asks For Leniency In Tax Case That Could Land Her in Prison

(Radio.com) Lauryn Hill is facing a possible prison sentence on Monday (April 22) for failing to file taxes on income of $1.8 million. But she is asking the judge to consider her past before making a judgement on her future.

Last Monday (April 15) TMZ reported that Hill was asking for mercy from the court because of, among other factors, terrifying threats she faced that kept her from paying her tax bill. But Hill's attorney said the report unfairly represented his clients position.

"We're not asking for leniency over 'terrifiying threats,'" Hill's attorney Nathan J. Hochman told Radio.com. "At sentencing, we will be seeking lenience from the judge based on who Ms. Hill is, what she has done positively in the past, what she does in the present, and what we hope she will be doing in the future. She is fully committed to paying back all her tax obligations going forward."

In June of 2011, Lauryn Hill released a rambling statement that addressed her failure to pay her taxes, which involved the "military industrial complex" and the need for her and her family to retreat from a "climate of hostility." more on this story
