(Radio.com) Amy Winehouse's life is coming to the big screen in a new documentary. Universal Music, the owner of Island Records, the label that released Winehouse's 2006 album Back To Black, and director Asif Kapadia are teaming up to tell the singer's tragic story through unseen archive footage, according to film site Deadline.

"Amy was a once-in-a-generation talent who captured everyone's attention; she wrote and sung from the heart, and everyone fell under her spell," Kapadia said in a statement. "But tragically, Amy seemed to fall apart under the relentless media attention, her troubled relationships, her global success and precarious lifestyle. As a society we celebrated her huge success, but then we were quick to judge her failings when it suited us."

Using footage of the singer, the doc will cover the Winehouse's life in her own words, tackling her influential music career along with the drug and alcohol problems that eventually led to her tragic demise in 2001 at the age of 27 from accidental alcohol poisoning.

"This is an incredibly modern, emotional and relevant film that has the power to capture the zeitgeist and shine a light on the world we live in in a way that very few films can," the film's producer, James Gay-Rees, said. more on this story
