Joe Jonas Opens Up On Controversial Topics

(Radio.com) Sunday night (Dec. 1), New York Magazine published a lengthy piece where Joe Jonas detailed the rise and dissolution of the Jonas Brothers. In what was exclusively his side of the story, the middle Jonas named names and pulled punches in revealing his romantic exploits, the group's dealings with Disney, religion and why the JoBros decided to Bro no more, at least musically.

Here are his most surprising revelations: "The first time I smoked weed was with Demi [Lovato] and Miley [Cyrus]. I must have been 17 or 18. They kept saying, 'Try it! Try it!' so I gave it a shot, and it was all right."

Finally, confirmation that Miley wasn't just smoking salvia. Honestly, this is a big one simply because it confirms how early this kind of partying was going on amongst the now-grown-and-real Disney stars. "I preferred going to punk-rock shows in small venues in New Jersey, where we grew up, wearing my jean jacket and all my band pins."

Okay, we all knew JoBros had legit taste in music, but Joe in particular has always been packaged as the slick, potential pop-star middle brother. So, getting his hoodie on and punking out in NJ isn't exactly an obvious one.

"For the record, we didn't have the traditional rock-and-roll experience. We were kids working with Disney, so finding a girl in our hotel room didn't feel like an open invitation. This isn't 1986, and I'm not in a hair-metal band. It felt like a problem we had to solve without it getting us into trouble."

Joe offers a lot of insights into working with Disney, all of them oppressive but that's a story we've heard from every graduate of the Disney machine thus far. After years of stories from the Beatles to the Backstreet Boys about groupies, you kind of just take it for granted that every boy in a boy band is hooking up with fans who make themselves readily available. While Joe does go on to admit he dated and hooked up with some fans, this particular spin on the situation was unexpected.

In the piece, Joe addresses JoBros' infamous purity rings, revealing that he started having sex a few years before he took his off. The band was marketed a little bit as preacher's kids (again, Disney sanitizing), so the longtime split from the church/religion as a whole for these guys is not what we were all led to believe was going on in their lives at the time.

"Things kept building up, and Demi ended up punching a girl in the face on a plane, because she thought the girl was blaming her for something. Everybody gasped, and the girl just started bleeding. That's when her team and her family told her, 'You need to go into rehab.'" more revelations here.
