Bob Dylan The First Rockstar in American Academy of Arts and Letters

(Gibson) Bob Dylan has become the first rock artist to be inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Officials in the Academy inducted Dylan as an honorary member, saying they couldn't decide whether it was his words or his music that warranted his membership in the prestigious honor society.

"The board of directors considered the diversity of his work and acknowledged his iconic place in the American culture," said executive director Virginia Dajani, speaking to the Associated Press.

"Bob Dylan is a multi-talented artist whose work so thoroughly crosses several disciplines that it defies categorization." Other honorary members of the Academy include Woody Allen, Meryl Streep and Martin Scorsese.

Dylan has already accepted his membership a condition of his being voted through but his manager had no comment on whether he would attend the induction ceremony in May. more on this story
