Justin Timberlake's new album "The 20/20 Experience" came close to reaching platinum sales its first week in stores and will debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 Album chart when it is published today.

The album sold 968,000 copies over the past week since it's March 19th release, according to numbers from Nielsen SoundScan, reports Billboard.

Timberlake also enjoyed the strongest first week album sales of his solo career with the new effort. His 2006 album "FutureSex/LoveSounds," debuted at No. 1 with 684,000 in sales.

Timberlake's previous group N'Sync still holds the record for the biggest week in the U.S. with their 2000 album "No Strings Attached," which sold a staggering 2.42 million copies its first week of release.

The finalized numbers have also earned Timberlake the biggest selling release of the year, topping the previous record holder Mumford & Sons' "Babel," which has sold 631,000 this year, according to Billboard.
