(Radio.com) Ralph Baer, recognized as the creator of video games died on Saturday (12/6) at his home in New Hampshire. He was 92. The German born Baer began work on the technology to play video games on a TV set in 1966. Six years later he licensed it to Magnavox which led to the creation of the first in-home gaming system called Odyssey.

The original unit itself has become a collectible, selling for close to $1000 on auction sites. Game play on the Odyssey was considered cutting edge at the time but as these commercials for the unit show, players needed to affix a plastic overlay on their TV for game graphics. But that didn't stop it from becoming a very big hit and launching what is now a multi-billion dollar industry.

Baer also worked with Coleco on gaming systems and created the electronics for everyone's favorite party game - Simon. He also wrote about this life in the industry in Videogames: The Beginning.
