Nirvana Practiced 10 Hours a Day for 'Nevermind' to Stay Warm
. In his keynote address at the Yellow Phone Music Conference in Milwaukee, Nevermind producer (and Garbage member) Butch Vig noted that Nirvana practiced ten hours a day for six months before heading into the studio to record the 1991 classic. If that seems like a lot, and it is, the band's relentless practice schedule wasn't for the reasons you might think. Nirvana didn't rehearse so much just to get good. According to Vig, the band was freezing in their apartment and practiced to stay warm, a message that surely resonated with the typically chilly Wisconsin crowd. "They were living in a really floppy, s--y apartment up in the northwest, and the rehearsal space had a space heater," Vig said in his speech (via Spin). "So they would go in there and it would be warm and they would go in there and play until 10, 11 o'clock at night and then they'd go back to their apartment." Read more here.
