Sledge, part of the famous Muscle Shoals, Ala., scene of the '60s, grew to prominence after "When a Man Loves a Woman," famously covered by Michael Bolton for a Grammy-winning version in 1991, reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1966. It was Sledge's only top 10 hit on the chart, though he earned three additional top 10s on Billboard's R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart for "Warm and Tender Love" (No. 5), "It Tears Me Up" (No. 7) and "Take Time to Know Her" (No. 6).
