Fishburne will play Alex Haley, the author of the 1976 novel Roots: The Saga Of An American Family, on which the series was based. Fishburne's fellow actors have yet to be announced, but the series features some other big names in the writing department, among them Lawrence Konner (Boardwalk Empire), Mark Rosenthal (Mona Lisa Smile), Alison McDonald (Alpha House) and Charles Murray (Sons of Anarchy).

The new Roots is being billed as a "contemporary production, incorporating more material from Haley's novel, as well as carefully researched new scholarship of the time." Read more - here.
