'Penny Dreadful' Renewed for a Third Season on Showtime

(Radio.com) The heartbreaking gothic horror drama Penny Dreadful will be renewed for a third season, Showtime announced. The Showtime series, currently in the midst of its second season (the finale of which airs July 5), will return for a nine-episode run in 2016.

Based on the image circulating alongside Showtime's press release, all the main characters will likely be returning in the new season: Vanessa Ives (Eva Green), Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett), Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton), Dr. Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway), Sembene (Danny Sapani), Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney) and the Creature, also known as John Clare (Rory Kinnear), as well as this season's "big bad," Evelyn Poole (Helen McCrory) and Ferdinand Lyle (Simon Russell Beale).

Characters not pictured include Lily Frankenstein (Billie Piper), who we learned last episode has some strange sexual preferences; Angelique (Jonny Beauchamp), who is at least one of Dorian Gray's love interests this season; and Hectate Poole (Sarah Greene), Evelyn's daughter (and, possibly, her adversary).
