Singled Out: Brian Dunne's Taxi
.
Americana singer-songwriter Brian Dunne is on the road promoting his new album "Bug Fixes & Performance Improvements" and we asked him to share the story behind the track "Taxi". Here is the story: Taxi is a song I emptied the tank on. It was the last song I wrote for "Bug Fixes & Performance Improvements," and I had a lot of things I still wanted to say. It is also the song I'm proudest of. I grew up an hour outside of New York City, in a town where nothing really happened. It was mainly populated by chain restaurants and strip malls, and had that strange paradox of overpopulation and small town (read: small-minded) sensibilities. Call it the worst of both worlds. It's not a bad place or anything; it just wasn't for me. Growing up kind of sucks anywhere, I think. I spent those years waiting for my life to begin, with a singular vision of how things would be once I was out of there. Of course, nothing ever quite works out as we've planned, and I've had to do a lot of reckoning with the reality of it all. Taxi is my story. Deconstructing it makes it a little less universal, but it's the truth. The song is set in the middle of the night, heading through the Holland Tunnel in a cab. If you've ever taken a New York City cab to the airport or the bus or whatever, you know that it's a whole thing -- shuffling your bags, waving down the driver. But there's a brief moment of peace before you get to where you're going when you're sitting there and there's nowhere else you can be. And this story is set in that half hour of time, reflecting on all the things that brought you here. Enjoy. Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album right here!
