Singled Out: Alice Mary's Loving Game
.
Alice Mary has released a new single called "Loving Game" from her forthcoming "I Am Here" EP (out July 7th) and to celebrate we asked her to tell us about the new track. Here is the story: When I started on the production I originally intended it to be an instrumental. I had bought a broken old autoharp off ebay and I'd set myself a project of tuning all the strings to the notes of one chord, recording lots of samples then re-tuning to another chord, recording, etc until I had all 24 major and minor chords. It ended up taking hours longer than I expected... So with this song I was experimenting with these big blocks of chords, adding filters to get the "wwwooom" sounds. Then I cut up little bits of twangy string noises and added them in, added a beat, a wobbly bassline and a little synth part all in Logic 9, and that was it. The lyrics started as fragments that came to me over time, I'd write them down in my phone then file them away, I remember the chorus lyric I wrote months before and just kept on coming back to it and not knowing what to do with it. Anyway eventually I got my heart broken and the day after I desperately needed something to distract me. So I sat down and started writing about how I was feeling and singing it over the top of this instrumental, and that formed the verses of the song. Looking through the lyrics I had in my phone I found I had quite a lot that were actually about the same things, struggling between extremes, caring too much, not enough, staying closed off or taking on too many problems from other people. Even though the song is about being dumped I kept the chorus lyrics as "I'm gonna kiss you and run away" because it's more fun to sing about running away than being left. So the lyrics came together in one afternoon. After I got my band together my drummer Alex suggested we go in to the studio to add more live parts to the songs so now there's extra drums, live bass and synths (a lovely Juno-6) on there. I re-recorded all the vocals in a studio with Marc Pell (of Micachu And The Shapes) but the 'la's in the intro are actually the original demo vocal I made in my bedroom as they had a certain quality we couldn't replicate. Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself here and learn more about the EP right here!
