The Deftones were set to rock their hometown of Sacramento Sunday night (July 15) but were forced to cancel the appearance due to illness. Frontman, Chino Moreno was taken to a Sacramento emergency room on Sunday complaining of severe throat pain. Moreno was then ordered by doctors not to use his voice for 24-to-48 hours and was forced to call off the Deftones appearance at a sold-out show Sunday night. According to a spokesperson for the group, Moreno will visit a ear, nose and throat doctor in Sacramento, and will also be seeing a specialist in Los Angeles later this week.
The Deftones had just kicked off their summer tour with Godsmack last week. The band is hoping to reschedule the Sacramento show for later this Fall.
Moreno was also forced to call off a radio interview on the nationally syndicated Rockline program Monday night. Deftones drummer Abe Cunningham filled in for Moreno and appeared with Godsmacks Sully Erna.
Update 7-18-01:
We just received the following from the Deftones camp:
SEVERE VOCAL INJURY FORCE DEFTONES TO CANCEL L.A. AND SAN DIEGO SHOWS
Deftones are forced to cancel tonight's concert at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre in Irvine, CA, as well as Friday's show at San Diego's Sports Arena. These will be the band's third and fourth consecutive missed concerts due to severe vocal injury sustained by singer Chino Moreno.
Moreno has been in Los Angeles for the past two days under the medical supervision of Beverly Hills ear, nose and throat specialist, Dr. Joseph H. Sugarman. Dr. Sugarman's report says that Moreno has "a huge inflammation on his right vocal chord and partial paresis on his left vocal chord." The doctor has prescribed "the appropriate antibiotic and medication," and has placed Moreno under "strict vocal arrest" pending a daily re-evaluation of his medical condition.
Moreno will spend the next two days completely
resting his voice, and the band looks forward to getting back on stage
at their Phoenix show on Saturday, July 21.
