Wetwood Smokes - Earth Tones & Red

.
Wetwood Smokes' Earth Tones & Red opens with the catchy "A Better Man," which combines a Kings Of Leon-esque vocal in some places, with a world music-y Local Natives groove. Lyrically, though, it fails the truth test; especially when they sing the following: "But If I could find a better man for you/You know that's exactly what I'd do/If I could find a better man/I'd leave and not come back again." Really? He's going to go out and find a better man for his girl? That's about as likely as O.J. Simpson going out the find the 'real' killer.

"Cold," however, is much more believable as one man wonders if he'd be cold he strayed from his beloved. It's a bit of a rhetorical question, of course, but when these words are matched to a piano-driven dirge, the effect is chilling.

This inventive trio - from Orange County, of all places - is comprised of stepbrothers Josh Bowman and Steven Howard, rounded out by Chrystian Cano. Like the best new music, Wetwood Smokes is nearly impossible to categorize. Who says no good thing comes out of Orange County? Wetwood Smokes would certainly beg to differ.
