Hugh Cornwell - The Fall and Rise of Hugh Cornwell

.
Cornwell left revered English rock band the Stranglers 25-years ago and this anthology of his solo work, the first of his career, compiles tunes from early albums Wired, Guilty, Hi Fi, Beyond Elysian Fields and Hooverdam.

And an excellent job was done with the cherry-picking of two songs from each with cuts like the peppy "Leave Me Alone," the subdued "Beat of My Heart" and the Nick Lowe-like "Under Her Spell" demonstrating his mastery of the pop idiom.

Among all the highlights are absolute gems like "First Bus to Babylon" and the oddly-named but rocking "Please Don't Put Me on a Slow Boat to Trowbridge."

And just to show that he hasn't lost his chops, Cornwell throws in a brand new sparkler "Live It and Breathe It" to round out this impressive collection.
