Haunted Hits and Terrifying Treats

by Kevin Wierzbicki

Did you say "trick or treat"? Well we heard you, and here are a few musical items that are definitely treats for you to check out this Halloween season.

The Rhythm Coffin - Monster on My Back
This six-song EP is bookended by two versions of the perennial spooky favorite "The Monster Mash," the first being a cool version featuring monster growls and unhinged cackling along with guest vocals from Davey Suicide and Calico Cooper, who as Alice Cooper's daughter knows a little something about music and novelty horror. "Monster on My Back" is an eerie psychobilly romp, "Sleep When I'm Dead" has a rhythmic bounce that makes it a fun singalong and "Spooktacular Season's Greetings" looks forward to when all the good little ghosties and ghoulies get presents on "creepy Christmas" (best wishes for a haunted Hanukkah and kooky Kwanza are issued too.) This set of totally campy songs will bring listeners a smile any time of year.

AFI - All Hallow's E.P.
On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of its original release, All Hallow's E.P. is being rereleased on Oct. 25 as a 10" picture disc with the original Alan Forbes cover art on Side A and a happy jack-o-lantern on Side B. The E.P. holds four songs; the ominous "Fall Children," the seasonal anthem that is "Halloween," the speedy thrash of "The Boy Who Destroyed the World" and the punk rock perfection of "Totalimmortal." Only 5000 copies of this collectible will be available.

Halloween Silent Disco - Oct. 31 - Las Vegas Mini Gran Prix, Las Vegas NV
You can always enjoy zooming around on go-karts, carnival rides and arcade games at Las Vegas Mini Gran Prix, but from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm this Halloween you can also dance the evening away at the silent disco party. Don your favorite costume, rent some glow-in-the-dark headphones and choose from three channels of music: Top 40 Dance Hits, '80s, '90s and 2K Throwbacks or Hip-Hop/R&B. Food and refreshments will be available at this all-ages event and beer and wine will be available for purchase by those of age. Event details and ticket information available here

Mushroomhead - Oct. 31 - Flashback Live, Ft. Wayne, IN
What better time to see this band of masked monster rockers than on Halloween? The group's Halloween Tour is about to wrap up; they'll be scaring the daylights out of Cleveland and Columbus, OH only after this Halloween show. He Kill 3 and Unsaid Fate get the evening of fun started. Ticket information is here
