Singled Out: Between The Rain's Mudroom

New York trio Between the Rain are billed as walking the line between grunge and alternative metal. Today they tell us about their latest single "Mudroom". Here is the story:

When we were all in this hourly practice space working on songs we already had around, Victoria started playing this riff on bass that had us all turn our heads and figure, "We gotta try to see what works with this!" I set out to write some words to it when we had a few different parts and the words themselves didn't happen as fast as I would have liked, but the meaning and the melody kept carrying it along. The thought was to create a meandering, run-on sentence feeling like a rap somehow but keeping intact the idea of our relationship with technology being a double-edged sword.

The first line got the ball rolling. Usually a chorus or some repetitive element is at play in the very beginning, but this time it was a hopeless image with some kind of broken gadget at the onset that inspired what followed. It was, "Meet me in these new thoughts that never breathe. Broke my receiver, the signal lost the feed." Beyond that, the words started to become a tongue-in-cheek "thanks for nothing" to the shades of everyday life that are sometimes more complicated than ever before, coming to a head with the last chorus', "To what do we owe the pleasure?"

Essentially, it started as a metal riff and turned into a bittersweet love song about cell phones and Wifi.

Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album right here!
