Singled Out: Steep Steps' Game of Thrones (in The Upside Down)

Electronic production duo Steep Steps have been turning heads with their mashup "Game of Thrones (in The Upside Down)" and to celebrate we asked Tony Correlli to tell us about the track. Here is the story:

I was working on some monosynth sounds one night and randomly started playing the beginning of the "Game of Thrones" theme. It was fun, so I started recording it, taking the medieval-sounding parts of that arrangement and interpreting them as synth patches. The more layers I tracked, the more it reminded me of "Stranger Things", so I started to dial in those kinds of sounds and worked them into the chords and time signature of the "Game of Thrones" theme.

It really came together quickly. I sent it to Athena and asked her to vocalize the melody. She didn't seem too interested since she hadn't seen either Stranger Things or Game of Thrones at the time. A bit discouraged, I shelved the idea until late one night after we finished another song and I brought up the ProTools session with the tracks. She was ready to crash, but seemed to get an idea on how to vocalize it and hopped up to grab the mic. She did it in just a few minutes. Her voice instantly transformed the track from a quirky little experiment into something that fit our sound and paid tribute to two cool series that would normally be separated by a significant amount of space and time. It happened so quickly. We have thrown away other songs after spending much more time on them that that. There's a certain truth in that experience that bleeds over into other aspects of life.

Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and watch the video right here!
