Singled Out: MOBS' Say Anything

Melbourne band MOBS recently released their new EP "You Want Beauty?" and to celebrate we asked lead singer Jordan Clarey to tell us about the single "Say Anything." Here is the story:

Say anything came about a few weeks into the writing process for a bunch of mobs songs in march this year. Our writing process is quite simple, I sit in a circle with our producers/my song writing partners and we basically just riff off each other! As they are the bands songs, I work out what I want the song to be about. The messages, the themes, the basic outline. Then Someone starts jamming a beat or a chord progression and we just take it in turn singing jibberish until something sticks.

For Say Anything we had already smashed out a few songs and wanted a more contemplative, moody song. I was writing all the songs about my favourite classic 80s 90s movies. I showed them the scene from 'Say Anything' where Jon Cusak holds the boombox over his head playing In your eyes by Peter Gabriel and I said 'Lets make that'. I knew straight away the song would be called Say Anything.

Michael Paynter (one of the producers of MSquared Productions) started with an airy, synth, chord progression and he came up with the first part of the verse melody. From there it all just flew out. we traded lines, and melodies and lyrics. It was fast and just felt right. I wrote the chorus melody and lyrics in one run through of the chorus it just felt like it needed to be this big statement and emotional plea as if this song was now THE song that was being played through the boombox above Jon Cusak's head.

Once the melody and lyrics where down, we all went back through it and started adding the layers of what is now the final song. We wanted it to feel nostalgic and cheesy and like it could fit in an 80s movie. Hopefully it hit the mark.

Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album right here!
