Brother Hawk released their new "Big Trouble Sessions" live EP this week (November 8th) and to celebrate we asked frontman J.B. Brisendine to tell us about the single "Like Water". Here is the story:
"Like Water" is the first song we wrote after Evan (drums) joined the band. We actually had a version of it before, but Evan joining was really a kind of rebirth for us, it's been very energizing, and it gave us the confidence to tear it apart and work to make something better. I'm so glad we did because it's my absolute favorite song we've ever written, and I'm really excited that we've been putting that same amount of work into everything we've been writing since.
Lyrically it was a tough one to write, it was the first song I finished after my father (and our harmonica player) Joe died in 2017. He was my best friend and biggest inspiration.
Initially it was just about the depression I've experienced since he passed, but once we reworked the song it had this slow build of tension and then a grand release.
To me, it was like water. Evaporating and slowly building in the atmosphere until it finally breaks loose and rains back down. It made me realize i can do the same, be deeper than I've ever been, rise out of it, and honor my Dad by spreading the love that he showed me my entire life.
That's what this song is really about, the strength we find in love. Hope y'all feel it.
