Richie Havens Sets New Release and Tour Plans
PR reports: A sense of timelessness rings throughout Richie Havens' latest release, Nobody Left to Crown, as though the passing years have only strengthened the meaning of his soul-filled folk rock. Nobody Left to Crown, to be released to the US on Verve Records on July 29th, attests that Richie Havens has never been more relevant, necessary even, than he is today.

For over three decades, Richie has used his music to convey messages of brotherhood and personal freedom. With more than twenty-five albums released and a touring schedule that would kill many a younger man, he continues to view his calling as a higher one. As he told The Denver Post, "I really sing songs that move me. I'm not in show business; I'm in the communications business. That's what it's about for me".

chris and thomas Tour
Musebox reports: Having been around for years, chris and thomas are hitting the scene again with a newly booked tour coming up in August. The duo's ability to bring a fresh spin on genres that have lost their niche in mainstream music makes them quite the anomaly. chris and thomas' live shows will bring back the good old days of music, if only ephemerally, and they will definitely be something you won't want to miss.

With sounds gathered from the landscapes of the American Southwest, chris and thomas' music could just as easily find its home in the rainy hills of the early 1970's English countryside. Combining American roots instrumentation with soothing vocal harmonies, the duo's rustic sounds and heartfelt songs are filled with thoughtful lyricism, harkening back to the likes of Nick Drake, Simon and Garfunkel, Bob Dylan and the Beatles.

Lenka Sets Solo Debut
Epic reports: Lenka, former vocalist for the critically acclaimed Australian electronic/ambient band Decoder Ring, will release her self-titled solo debut on Epic Records on September 23rd.

Lead single "The Show" goes to radio on July 29th. In characteristic Lenka fashion, the song takes a dour premise - that life is a show, and sometimes a pretty bad one - and delivers it with such aplomb that one can't help but grin as it erupts into a bold, brassy closing refrain of "I want my money back!" "I decided I should just get all my friends to come in and be like the drunken tavern chorus," explains Lenka. "Australian folk singer Missy Higgins joined in on the bit."

Other album highlights include the spine-tingling "Trouble Is A Friend," "Wrote Me Out," co-written (strangely) with AFI's Hunter Burgan, the seductive "Force of Nature," "Dangerous & Sweet" with Howie Day (stranger still) on guest vocals and the lullaby-like "Don't Let Me Fall," with strings conducted by composer/arranger David Campbell (otherwise known as Beck's father). Producer Mike Elizondo (Fiona Apple, Jay Z) arranged for the session to take place in one of the historic Capitol Records studios. "It was just extraordinary, being in a studio with nine string players and David conducting," says Lenka, who wrote or co-wrote all of the album's songs and also plays piano, percussion, vibraphone and glockenspiel. "I'm normally in a grungy garage making my music." - more on this story

Mendoza Line Members Resurface
PR reports: Shannon McArdle releases her debut solo album, "Summer of the Whore," through Bar-None Records on August 19, 2008. This is the first recording by McArdle since the Mendoza Line disbanded in 2007. Collaborating on arrangements with former Mendoza Line alum Adam D Gold, her album is a sparse, haunted affair that delivers a wide variety of moods and textures.

When Shannon McArdle left the Mendoza Line in 2007, she was also leaving behind a marriage to fellow member, Timothy Bracy. Along with a cast of contributors, the Mendoza Line recorded a remarkable body of work that wrestled with the intoxication of life and love on the edge of the new millennium. McArdle met Bracy in the late 1990s in Athens, Georgia and struck up a musical collaboration as well as romantic relationship. Along with an early incarnation of the Mendoza Line, the band made the move to New York City, establishing themselves as a rollicking, well-read rock band with a love for The Replacements, Bob Dylan, and the Velvet Underground.

After four albums with the group and another project with Bracy called Slow Dazzle, Shannon McArdle is heading out on her own with an unflinching report from the frontlines of divorce. Summer of the Whore is a unique, fearless view of her life from the summer of 2007, finally ready for delivery in the summer of 2008. - more on this story
