Sun Down on Team Love
PR reports: Nik Freitas' Team Love debut Sun Down - equal parts wry, warm and sonorous - is the end product of several years of ups and downs. Freitas writes, plays, engineers and produces every note on his records. Not that he's got a lot of expensive gear. A visit to his Poppy Peak studio/shed reveals that Nik is working low-budget minor miracles, The kind of miracles one receives via hundreds of hours on Craigslist. Sun Down will hit stores on May 8.

One listen to Sun Down and you know you're hearing a certain hard-won grace. It all began several years ago for Freitas, when a co-worker sold him an antique piano that was "used by a street musician before the dawn of the Casio." Nik taught himself how to play the thing, and it became the cornerstone of his three earlier records, Here's Laughing at You, Heavy Mellow and Voicing the Hammers.

Sun Down is a succinct, concentrated record that will take the listener from Paul Simon's Graceland to David Bowie's Hunky Dory. Each song each moment is endowed with a striking mix of self-possession and gravity. There is no reaching, no going for the gold, just ten lovely four minute thesis statements. - Listen to the title track

Bail Denied in Ramones Murder Case
AP reports: The personal assistant charged in the beating death of real estate agent and punk rock pioneer Linda Stein was denied bail Wednesday even though the defense argued new DNA evidence justified it.

Stein's blood was spattered around her Manhattan penthouse after she was bludgeoned to death in October, but not a drop was found on the clothes of Natavia Lowery, 26, who is charged with second-degree murder, her attorney said.

Male DNA also was mingled with Stein's blood in a bathroom sink suggesting her killer was a man, not the female assistant, Ronald Kuby argued. - more on this story

Seedy Linkin Park Film Now Online
PR reports: THE SEED, a short film produced and directed by Linkin Park DJ Joseph Hahn and presented by Shorts International will make its debut on iTunes today. Hahn, whose directorial credits include such award-winning videos as Linkin Park's "In The End" (2002's VMA "Video of the Year" winner) and "Somewhere I Belong" (2003's VMA "Best Rock Video" winner), as well as music clips for Xzibit, Story Of The Year and Alkaline Trio, makes his first foray into directing short films with THE SEED. Hahn recently directed Linkin Park videos for the smash hits "What I've Done" and "Bleed It Out" off their double-platinum-selling Minutes to Midnight album.

Musically, THE SEED features two untitled original compositions by Hahn as well as a track ("There They Go") from Fort Minor, the side project fronted by Linkin Park's Mike Shinoda. Discussing the film's impetus, Hahn says, "I saw a homeless guy having an argument with someone who clearly wasn't there. I wondered what it would look like to see the fight through his eyes. What if what he was seeing was real? Who does he think is out to get him?"

THE SEED tells the story of Sung, portrayed by Will Yun Lee (Torque, Elektra, Die Another Day, "CSI," "Bionic Woman"), a homeless veteran losing his mind on the banks of the L.A. River. Pursued by unseen forces, fighting unseen foes, Sung is ostensibly "just another lunatic." But as his invisible war continues under bridges and in tunnels, the viewer is taken deeper into his nightmareinto a nightmare of conspiracy, cloaking and the government's unseen war. Sung struggles to fight through what is visible to him, yet invisible to the world around him. - trailer and more info

The Irony of Naming Your Band "It Prevails" Exposed
Metal Underground reports: It Prevails has announced plans to go on hiatus following several problematic developments. According to the group, "It Prevails is simply going to resign from being a full-time band at the moment. Call it a hiatus, if you must."

Chief among the aforementioned developments is the departure of drummer Aaron Marsh. Frontman Ian Fike explains: "After four years, Aaron Marsh has decided to leave It Prevails and not continue to tour with us any longer.

"For those who know and for the people who dont, touring and being in a full time band is one of the most dangerous financial and mental positions to put yourself in. Constantly digging your self out of debt between tours but still having to pay to live and eat on the road is a very hard thing to do, some people crack under this pressure. Aaron has." - more on this story

Malevolent RECreations
PR reports: Metal Mind Productions announce the re-release of Malevolent Creation's "Eternal", "In Cold Blood", "Manifestation" & "The Fine Art of Murder" in a new digipak edition, limited to numerated 2000 copies. Classic material from Crash Music archives digitally remastered using 24-Bit process on golden disc. The albums will be available on 21st April in 2008

While some death metal bands constantly try to redefine their music with various (and often completely unnecessary) stylistic experiments, Malevolent Creation have always been true to the old-school and brutal ways of pure metal annihilation.

Each album recorded by the band delivered a prime slice of death metal meat, bloody and juicy as hell. "Eternal", the group's fourth full-length release, is a fine example of sheer death metal brutality, spiced by a handful of thrash-influenced ingredients, making this album one of Malevolent Creation's heaviest efforts. "In Cold Blood", the group's fifth full-length release, showcases a violent behemoth in his strongest form yet this album is pure destruction played at the speed of light, overwhelming the listener with sheer brutality "Manifestation" a compilation album from 2000 - is a perfect summary of the group's most violent period, delivering some of the best tracks in the entire history of the genre "The Fine Art of Murder", the group's seventh full-length release, brought Malevolent Creation to a turning point where aggression clashed with technicality in a perfect blend, creating one of the most intense death metal offerings ever released The album shows Malevolent Creation in its strongest form, delivering songs that nowadays are considered classics of the genre. - more on this story

The Further Adventures of Dr Jiffy Lube

Steve Poltz Books More Dates
PR reports: Steve Poltz considers himself more at home in a hotel room than at his beach-accessible San Diego home. Many artists say they tour year-around, but Poltz truly does. Often when he plays a city, he comes back and hits it again within weeks, and then again. "No two shows are alike," he says. "So if you saw me at Joe's Pub in New York last month, you'll get an entirely different show the next time." Seeing that shows are unscripted, with no set lists, fueled only by the spirit of the audience, a growing legion of fans returns two and three times per year.

Poltz recently crammed a fortnight's worth of performances into one five-day period at South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, Texas. He's not sure whether the 12 shows (an official showcase and 11 unofficial ones) set an all-time record. But he suspects he reached a representative sample of SXSW-goers and non-badge-wearing Austinites alike. "SXSW is a melting pot fans, label heads, talent buyers, radio programmers and journalists all trying to have a good time," he says. "And we had an incredible week."

Following triumphant homecoming dates in San Diego and Los Angeles, Steve will take a rare breather for most of April. - He and band will be back on the road for more non-stop action

Is This Bangin' or Not? You Decide
PR reports: Fueled by his Spirit Animal and his endless repertoire, The Gray Kid has been putting the finishing touches on his third full-length album, "Willoughby," due later this year. Eight songs from the forthcoming album have been mixed by DJ Benzi (Lil Wayne, Clipse) into a seamless 12-minute album sampler, showcasing the Gray Kid's dynamic flow, thought-provoking wit and impressive range.

The entertainer, who has been honing his songs in near isolation for the last several months, premiered the new material and his powerful backing band Spirit Animal on New Year's Eve and has been performing select shows around town to a ravenous response. He will perform at the Echoplex in L.A. on March 29 followed by a gig at The Mirage in Las Vegas on April 1.

To flesh out his kaleidoscope of sound, the dynamo has enlisted a cosmopolitan mix of musicians - trumpets and clarinets from New York City, a string quartet from Los Angeles and a multi-instrumentalist from Washington, D.C. - to his already stellar backing players, comprised of established musicians who have played and toured with the likes of Ben Harper, The Pharcyde, Oliver Future, Taj Mahal and Tricky. Danny Kalb, best known for his work with Beck, Rilo Kiley and They Might Be Giants, handles mixing duties. As demonstrated on the eight-song sampler, these disparate parts come together to create a riotous mix sure to get any party started. Beginning with the funky electro soul of "Naked Eyes," it fluidly moves from the 8-bit crunk of "Eh Man" to the horn-filled hip-hop of "Pot Luck" and "I Feel Fly." "Morninin'" closes out the mixtape with the Gray Kid's rapid fire delivery over a bed of glitches, break beats and a barrage of other instrumentation. If the sampler is an indication of the overall record then, in the words of the Gray Kid, it is sure to be "bangin'." - download it at: www.graykid.com. and judge for yourself

Mailbag: Fifth Beatle, We're Serious Dude and the Credit Dork Scam
antiMusic reports: Have we got a mailbag for you this week! Nothing really controversial, but we have one interesting debate, a "serious" complaint and a singing dork scamming television viewers.

Who was the Fifth Beatle? A bit of debate over this topic as you'll see. Jim Quince writes: I'm sure Mr. Aspinall was a great guy & am sorry he is gone, but reporting him as the Fifth Beatle is dumb & possibly schizophrenic. First, silent Stuart Sutcliff was the Fifth Beatle. Then George Martin was the Fifth Beatle. Now Neil Aspinall?

Response: Jim, I understand where you are coming from BUT this title given to Neil came directly from one of the FOUR horse's mouth. See wiki info: "The Fifth Beatle is an informal title that various commentators in the press and entertainment industry have applied to persons who were at one point a member of The Beatles, or who had a strong association with the 'Fab Four' during the group's existence other than John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. The 'Fifth Beatle' claims appeared in the press immediately upon the band's sensational rise to global fame in 1963-1964 as the most famous quartet in pop culture.

"At the Beatles' 1988 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, George Harrison at one point stated that there were only two 'fifth Beatles': Derek Taylor and Neil Aspinall.

"Martin himself deflects claims of being the 'fifth Beatle' to Beatles' manager Brian Epstein."

We're Serious Dude We did get a few emails over the whole Motley rumor mess last week. We'd reprint one of them here, but they basically all said the same thing, as if written from the same collective brain, and were the equivalent to us just being "jealous haters". Which is fine... because we are. A bit about losing out on the throngs of Motley fans visiting our site was enjoyable as well. We'll miss all 14 of them. We really will.

But one fan went beyond the predictable gibberish and suggested that the mess was caused because we don't take the band seriously. He or she is right and we promise from hence forth to give things like pink bandanas and assless pants the serious consideration they deserve as we ponder the deep intellectual meanings of lyrics like "Girls, Girls, Girls
Long legs and burgundy lips / Girls, Girls, Girls / Red lips, fingertips" and "He's the one they call Dr. Feelgood / He's gonna be your Frankenstein". These lyrics evoke questions like: So are the lips red or burgundy? And what does the Mary Shelly's classic have to do with a drug dealer? Ok to be fair, Feelgood did have a deeper meaning then that silly line conveyed. And we do have to recognize the band's influence, without them raising the bar we may not have had the profound experience of hearing the genius of lyrics like "I'm just a sucker with a lump in my throat (hey) like a chump... I did it all for the nookie (come on) the nookie (come on) / so you can take that cookie and stick it up your (yeah)." We will do our best to take them more serious in the future. "Bashful Betty, such a bondage brat / Dressed in latex and coated in sewer rat" and "Got a date with my modem line / backdoor valentine." This really is pure genius! "..com .cum" very clever. You sold us.

In all seriousness, while Nikki's lyrics seldom delve into topics deeper then strippers, tattoos, and drugs we will give him props for having a great sense of melody that allows him to write catchy songs. If you enjoy their music, great! Enjoy it. Some of our writers here enjoy their music. But beyond that, it's still tough taking anyone that uses the word "dude," more than three times in a conversation that serious. We'll try and until then, party on dude!

Tip of the week or rather, Real News You Can Use!

Aside from arguing meaningless points with readers, The Mailbag sometimes offers up a public service. "F-R-E-E- that spells... bullsh*t". You can't seem to escape the singing dork commercials these days. He's trying to sell you a credit reporting service by telling you what a loser he is. The problem is he says this service is free, which it's not. To get your free report you have to sign up for a "free trial" in a credit monitoring service and if you don't cancel they will bill you $14.95 a month. The trouble is this "free trial" period is only 7 days and the fine print says it may take 2-3 weeks to be fully enrolled, so you can get alerts from all three the credit agencies. They only promise you a look at the Experian report. So if you have a major boo boo on your TransUnion report, you're screwed. So much for free huh?

Now it is my understanding that it is federal law that all three major credit reporting agencies are required to furnish a free copy of your credit report once a year (but you have to request it). You won't find your "free" credit reports at freecreditreport.com but at annualcreditreport.com; the site set up to provide these mandated credit reports online. Better yet, it's singing dork free and it really is free. Used it a couple months ago with no problem, they asked some questions to verify my identity and I got all three of my reports right then.

They say on the site: "This central site allows you to request a free credit file disclosure, commonly called a credit report, once every 12 months from each of the nationwide consumer credit reporting companies: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. AnnualCreditReport.com is the official site to help consumers to obtain their free credit report." So save yourself some money and help that other site's ads fail because the singing nerd has gone far beyond annoying. So to recap: read the small print; if they ask for a credit card number, it's not free. - F-R-E-E only spells free at this link
