Janis Joplin Holding Company Bandmate Dies
(Nightwatcher) James Gurley, former guitarist of Big Brother and the Holding Company, the psychedelic blues acid rock band from San Francisco who assisted Janis Joplin on her meteoric rise to fame in the late 60's has passed away from a heart attack December 20th at the age of 69. He was two days shy of his 70th birthday.

Born in Detroit, Michigan on December 22, 1939, Gurley took up the guitar at the age of nineteen, practicing long hours listening to blues, particularly fond of bluesman Lightnin' Hopkins. In 1962, he moved to San Francisco and became part of the coffee-house circuit, playing in the folk and country blues tradition.

In the summer of 1965, legendary promoter Chet Helms brought James to 1090 Page Street to meet Peter Albin and Sam Andrew of Big Brother and the Holding Company, and shortly thereafter, he joined the band. In June of 1966, Joplin joined the band, and shortly thereafter she and Gurley began a short lived affair. - more on this story

What In The Hell Happened To Pete Wentz's Face?
Fall Out Boy's Pete Wentz posted a mysterious blog on Monday. The posting including a couple of photos which showed his face bloodied and bruised. Instead of telling fans what happened to his face, he listed a long multiple choice list inviting them to guess what caused the injuries shown in the photo.

We have no idea if this is a eggnog induced hoax, if Pete had a makeup artist do this for a music video or some other reason or if he was really injured. We'll let you be the judge of that. Here is part of his message and one of the photos:
Several unsightly wounds are scattered around my face and eyes (see fig. 2). Choose your own excuse to advance the story!!! My face was badly bludgeoned because. A) Latenight game of "face jousting" gone horribly right. B) Called Perez a gay slur. C) Called Will.I.Am "Perez." D) In a Nyquil-induced haze I confused my own reflection with my estranged brother, David Archuletta. Ran into mirror full-speed.
- The list goes on here with more photos

Ozzy Scrooge Osbourne
Before you ask, it was a slow news day. But this story is timely given that it's just before Christmas and the "Prince of Darkness" has spoken out against the holiday. Nightwatcher has the Scrooge-worthy tale: Ozzy Osbourne has said he hates Christmas so much he would prefer to be in hospital.

The 61-year-old music legend said he finds the festive season dull and looks back with fond memories to 2003 when he spent the period unconscious following an accident.

He also had a Christmas number one that year after a duet with daughter Kelly, Changes, topped the charts. 'I was in a coma for a while so I missed Christmas, thank God. If I want to miss Christmas, I'll get on my quad bike and break my neck again.' - more on this story

The Rolling Stones Plan To Tour But May Leave One Member At Home
(Rock Radio) The Rolling Stones are planning a tour in 2010 but it may not feature Ronnie Wood because his drinking has reportedly gotten out of hand in the past year.

The Daily Mail reports the 62-year-old guitarist's lifestyle issues mean the band can't get insurance for the tour, and so much money is at stake it would be impossible to plan the trek without a backup policy.

In the past the band relied on Wood's wife Jo to keep him in line - but they divorced earlier this year after he was revealed to be having an affair with 21-year-old Ekaterina Ivanova. - more on this story

Misery Index Plan New Album
Misery Index has spent their recent time away from the road writing for their follow-up album to 2008's Traitors. The band will begin recording in early January with engineer Steve Wright at WrightWay Studios (Dying Fetus, Slipknot, Mos Def).

The album's tentative title is Heirs To Thievery and advance song titles include "Embracing Extinction", "Heirs To Thievery", "Fed To The Wolves", and "Sleeping Giants." A May 2010 release date is expected.

Misery Index's Jason Netherton commented on the album's lyrical theme via his Demockery blog: "The thread that binds several songs lyrically surrounds ideas of hidden history, how we interpret our nation, and our idea of who we are culturally and collectively, as it is generally handed down to us in terms of icons, wars, struggles and triumph." - more on this story

Innovators In Music TV Series To Air in January
Toronto's Original Spin Media, producers of the 39 part Beautiful Noise concert TV series and Solos: The Jazz Sessions, are pleased to announce Innovators In Music, a new series of documentary profiles on six dynamic musicians from a variety of genres, backgrounds, and disciplines. The series premieres on Bravo! on January 7, 2010 at 8:00PM EST and includes: Steve Earle (1/7), Levon Helm (1/14), Mickey Hart (1/21), Dave Stewart (1/28), Billy Bragg (2/4) and Sonic Youth (2/11).

Each half-hour episode explores how the artistic impulse extends beyond music-making into other realms of creative pursuit. From photography, painting, and politics to bonsai and beyond, the series examines the surprising and inspiring world of six Innovators In Music.

"We're very excited about Innovators In Music" states Producer Daniel Berman. "We caught each artist in a variety of places, sometimes in their homes, sometimes on the road - it's a great cross-section, there are some things shown and said on a more intimate, candid level." Berman continues, "it was a revelation as a true fan of the genre to go to Levon Helm's home in Woodstock and tape him perform, and interview him on his 69th birthday; hang with Steve Earle at his favorite guitar store in New York City and go for sandwiches, it's just stuff you just don't see that often. I see the programs as mini-documentaries, they're quick but they have substance." - more on this story

Joined by a handful of their peers from near and far, both shows featured entirely unique sets with Deftones performing songs from all five of their prior releases as well as some fan favorite covers. The Devil Wears Prada Named APs Band of the Year
As one of the brightest, rising stars in the metalcore world, The Devil Wears Prada has been named 2009's Band of the Year by Alternative Press. The band will grace the cover of AltPress' February 2010 issue, on stands January 5. With vocalist Mike Hranica having been featured on the cover of the magazine's Warped Tour August issue, this is the second time in less than a year that TDWP has been on the cover of AltPress.

The Alternative Press cover recognizes the breakthrough year that 2009 has been for The Devil Wears Prada - Hranica, guitarist/vocalist Jeremy DePoyster, guitarist Chris Rubey, bassist Andy Trick, keyboardist James Baney, and drummer Daniel Williams. The band's critically-acclaimed third album, With Roots Above and Branches Below (Ferret Records), was released in May and debuted at #11 on Billboard's Top 200 Albums Chart, immediately following a sold-out, 43-date headline tour; the band had a Main Stage slot on the Van's Warped Tour, co-headlined the November/December 27-date Napalm & Noise Tour with All That Remains, and found themselves on the covers of Outburn, HM, and AMP.

The Devil Wears Prada will join Killswitch Engage on their Winter U.S. tour as direct support beginning February 4, 2010. Live, the six-piece TDWP presents a powerful intensity that many other metalcore bands never quite achieve, with savage riffs, bulldozing guitar, thunderous beats, manic synths, and an assault of abrasive vocals. On this tour, the band will perform songs from all three of their releases - 2006's Dear Love: A Beautiful Discord, 2007's Plagues, and the new With Roots Above and Branches Below - more on this story
