Mick
Rock's Art |
antiMusic reports: If you are a rock fan chances
are good that you own one of Mick Rock's photographs - take a look at David
Bowie's Space Oddity. Lou Reed's Transformer. Iggy Pop's Raw Power and
you'll see his stellar work. Last week Morley spoke with Mick about one
of his latest projects, the photo package for the DVD release of one of
the year's most controversial movies, The Heart is Deceitful Above All
Things based on the JT LeRoy novel. (Google JT LeRoy to learn more about
the controversy. ) A good deal of the interview focuses on this project
and Mick's friendship and interaction with those involved but he also told
Morley how he got started on the path to being one of the most recognized
music photographers in the world. Here is an excerpt from the interview!
antiMUSIC: Now if we can turn the focus
to you for a few minutes. You studied languages at school. How did you
make the leap from languages to photography?
Mick Rock: Pause. Well. I think I was high,
to be honest with you. (laughs) Then I started playing with a friend's
camera and I think the intensification factor is what imprinted itself
on my psyche. I think the framing, the fact that you could pluck a little
bit of magic out of the fabric of everyday life. And it could seem, look,
feel very special and then if you played a little bit with color, and amplified
it with a wide angle, then you've got these images that imprinted themselves
on people's minds. I mean I was never interested in photography per se.
I was much more interested in the lives of the people I was studying like
Baudelaire, Rimbaud, the English romantics like Shelley and company or
maybe the beat poets. These were the people that I was studying and these
were the people that I was fascinated by. Somehow I think when I look back,
especially at those early pictures like. I think you can see that I viewed
David, Lee, Lou, Iggy, Freddy, through that particular prism. And it somehow
looks stuck on to those images themselves. Photography is kinda fascinating
really when you think it's technically a piece of what you should get is
a piece of reality but of course what you're really getting is an amplification,
you get this little slice amplified, jigged in some ways. I'm not saying
all photography is so memorable. In fact most of it, like most music is
pretty disposable. But some stuff stays in the mind. And nowadays some
people even call it art, and some have even called my work art (laughs)...and
it's been an interesting journey for me, that's for sure.[see full story

T's Body Count Set Release |
PR reports: Rapper/actor/rock'n'roller Ice-T
is at it again on Murder 4 Hire (Escapi Records) by Body Count, to be released
August 1, 2006. Lead guitarist Ernie C, bassist Vincent Price, drummer
OT and rhythm guitarist Bendrix hit the metal hard on 12 tracks of what
is sure to be controversial, argued over and demonized right from the jump.
Lyrically, the songs range from political
("The End Game"), personal ("You Don't Know Me [Pain]"), and religious
("The Passion Of The Christ"), to obsession ("In My Head"), armegeddon
("Dirty Bomb"), hate ("Lies") and "Relationships." Obviously, Body Count,
circa 2006, ain't backing down from anybody or anything. A eulogy for fallen
band member D-Roc is also included ("D Rocs [RIP]") as is a hilarious take
on deep south rednecks ("Down In The Bayou"). The title track is an instant
hit man anthem. The CD closes with "Mr. C's Theme," a show-stopping hard
rock instrumental.[see full story for more]- Click

Unexpect
in August |
PR reports: Montreal's Unexpect have set an
August 22nd release date for their new album 'In A Flesh Aquarium'. The
band skillfully blend classical music, black metal, technical prowess and
a hyperactive stage show fueled by chaos and a monstrous 9-string bass.
Think Cirque du Soleil goes black metal, amidst an acid-trip version of
The Dark Crystal. Crazy stuff but well worth investigating, mon amis![see

Giant
Squid Release |
PR reports: Giant Squid have set an August
22nd release date for their new album Metridium Field. Austin-based quintet
GIANT SQUID submerges themselves into a sonic realm of epic fuzz tones
saturated in analog synthesizer sounds, giving way to delicate breaks of
clean tranquility. Bizarre song titles referring to marine life and historical
tragedies are the norm as the band's cinematic soundscapes are soaked with
imagery of nautical desolation and mountainous solitude.[see full story

Chris
Smither Release |
PR reports: Chris Smither, whose songs have
been covered by Diana Krall, Emmylou Harris and Bonnie Raitt, to name a
few, is one of a handful of musicians active today who were on the scene
during the folk/blues renaissance of the '60s. Born in Miami and raised
in New Orleans -- where he first heard the blues -- before heading on to
Boston at the onset of that city's late '60s musical greening, Smither
has carved a reputation for transforming blues roots into modern-day songwriting
craft. His forthcoming twelfth recording, Leave The Light On, is defined
by bright, intricate guitar work, driving foot stomps and assured interplay
with a cadre of superb musicians.
Leave The Light On marks the start of a
new label relationship for Smither. The album will be released on his own
imprint, Mighty Albert, in association with the renowned acoustic and modern
folk label Signature Sounds on September 19. [see full story for more]-
