“Sorry to pull the plug on this Spenser but you obviously have gotten nowhere except being played with and I can’t afford to keep you on this assignment, “ he told me. “Write me a report of what you found and send me an expense report. This assignment is over.” Before I could respond he hung up.

I packed up my things, flew home and put together my report and sent it off to the magazine publisher. Even though I was no longer on the case, many things still bothered me and I promised myself I would work on this case unofficially in my free time. I just have to know the real story behind Slipknot and one day I will find it!

I recently saw Slipknot live at the Big Day Out festival in New Zealand, where I met Joey, Paul, Chris and Clown at the signing tent. The idea that they were put together like a boy band is ridiculous, these guys are for real... Slipknot started in Iowa and originally had a singer called Anders Andelfini (or something like that) and Clown wasn't in the band til later on. Do some real research you fool - you were totally had.

Ffs... Like it or hate it. Who the f*** cares?? Personally I like Slipknot. Still I'd have no quarrel with someone who doesn't. And as far as the mask thing goes, I really wouldn't WANT to know what they look like without the masks on. Say what you want but image is a important part of the music industry, so if it turns out they all look like a-holes I for one wouldn't think they would be half as cool as I do now. Sure, call me a superficial f***.. But then again I'm not one f you morons running around calling myself a maggot and stuff... I was working security at a show in Madison, WI. Slipknot was headlining. I met all the members without their masks on. THEY ARE NORMAL. They drink beer, tell jokes, and look at chics. Joey is short and Jim is tall. Without their masks they are individual guys ... with their masks they are SLIPKNOT. PLEASE do not confuse the two.

I really don't care whether you people do or do not like Slipknot, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but those who preach about hating Slipknot or go to every site they can find to diss a band they don't like is low, because some people do like Slipknot. In my opinion Slipknot is the best f*cking band ever alive, and their music has really helped me out when things were hell. I love heavy metal, but they are my favorite band. Those who want to diss them all the time and actually take the time to go onto sites to diss them, in front of all Slipknot's fans, GET A F*CKING LIFE, and say good things for once cuz I don't want to hear it all your bullsh*t. music is art, it is an expression, yet we all have the audacity to belittle every artist that comes around with an idea. slipknot frontman corey taylor has written some amazing and inspiring lyrics throughout his time. his powerful and passionate words have helped me through some bad sh*t. the problem i have is when haters come onto these things and bash them, or any other artist. if corey taylor writes a song about the father he never had, and we knock it down, then we are just destroying someone's reality. would you mock the surviver of a WW2 jewish concentration camp for viocing his words? the masks, we laugh at them, marvel at them or judge them. but why laugh at something so painful as the 7 inch nails in graig's mask. these masks don't hide identity, rather they bring out there pain from within. plus we all wear masks, we hide our true feelings about someone or something so as to not be ashamed. then we judge these masks, but who are we to judge unless we are able to judge ourselves. now onto there talents, i am a firm believer that slipknot are quite easily one of the most talented bands in the musical scene let alone the alienated genre that is metal. no man can contest to the insane energy that is joey jordison, maybe the best drummer in the world. both james root and mick thompson are avid guitar gods, not unlike the many guitar guru's before them. yet what sets mick and james apart is there dedication to there instrument, and the love for ripping an axe up. i'd like to see any haters here who say they arn't talented to play a song like surfacing, ha ha....f*ck off. sid, one of the best dj's around, spontanious and amazing at what he does, easily the best dj in a metal band, yes is is one of the only one's, but there is no other like him. if you ever listen to do nothing/bi*chslap, you'll see that Paul is not a one dimentional bassist, that his skill is expanded into multiple genre's of bass. the percussionists, chris and shaun, it may not look as if they are there for anything, but when you hear a song like prosthetics, scissors, skin ticket or people=s*** then you'll notice that they are incredibly well endowed. the amazing power of slipknot's beat is nothing but amplified by the intensity that they offer. Craig is a quiet member, and it looks as though he just stands there, yet the only progammer/sampler that poses and good contest with him would be wayne static. there is no other like craig jones, he is a genious, and makes every song extra creepy or pumped up. how many of the people here who bash the talents of slipknot can say that they are better than them, or you can even play a guitar, it's like saying that someone walks wrong. i play in a band, and we're pretty good, but i still suck compared to any member in slipknot. and if anyone believes they are mainstream, then you may as well suck corporate D!ck. mainstream music is eminem, justin timberlake and avril lavigne, not slipknot. how often can you say that there music or videos are played on radio or MTV, then again, when does MTV ever play video's? slipknot is an amazing band, but will never have mainstream status only because of who they are, as long as the masks are on, they will be contained to there loyal fans. yet there population of slipknot fans is considerably higher than that or nick carter. music is not a competition though. never should one band be better than the next. each band out there is doing there own thing for there own reasons, and for that, we should repect them (with exception to corporate made bands like o-town). never did beethoven and mozart have big battles for best record of the year, and never were they criticised as much as we butt-f*ck artists of today. slipknot are and always will be remember, not for the masks, but for the music, whether you like it or not...they are loved by millions, and they continue to produce records that sell. compare the talents of slipknot with that of a band like the strokes. but music also should not be about talent, every is talented in there own way. to those with an open mind, you will always be able to see slipknot for what it truly is. for those of you who bash them just for the sake of you name being on the internet, then you need to open your eyes and look deeper into the art rather than the stereotypes. i leave you with this...one way or another, the masks will come off, and the haters will just forget about them, but the fans will remember the faces of a band that moved the world.

Hey you guys - everyone has their own oppinions of Slipknot - whether they're crap or not - whether they'll be around within the next few decades or not. Personally I think some of their music is good - and this is coming from someone who likes Eminem! I think that the music you listen to is determined by your mood. I personally have been affected by an exposure to different kinds of music over the last few months. I still don't think Slipknot sucks, but I just have to be in the right mood to listen to them. Perhaps the mood is what it's all about. I recall during that maxim interview(or was it FHM?) that a kid came up to Corey while he was walking around Ozzfest with the writer and security had the kid wisked away cause he was bringing attention to Corey without his mask. How real could that be?

well it's as simple as this, if you don't like the music or anything that's involved in it don't listen to, don't buy. if you have to sink as low as saying that only pale white gay kids listen to it, you need to leave town and experience a different environment. i like the band, the lyrics, oh god the lyrics. if you're offended by it, well there's the same principle don't listen to it. i think that the lyrics are funny, in there own aggresive way. and as for the guy that wrote the article. if you're having trouble as to the real identity of slipknot, maybe you're not looking hard enough. corey taylor is the lead singer of stonesour for christ's sake. they are just a normal bunch of guys that decided to make music. for example one of the founders of the band Shaun M. Crahan was a welder before the band started. and if you still really want to know who they really are, maybe read some metal magazines yourself. i believe there was an article in maxim where a person set up interviews with some of the band members, without them wearing there masks. if still you are baffled, and the thought of the band keeps you awake at night, you are one of the most pathetic individuals on this planet. get a life, and leave the guys alone for christ's sake

I saw 3 of the Slipknot guys backstage in Antwerp, Belgium, march 2000, Talked to them for a while about a wide variety of things (Björk! Fear and loathing in Las Vegas!). Corey, James and Joey seemed pretty real to me. I do know this woman in Iowa too, she happens to have a "wild" daughter who used to hang out with them, and still sees the guy who helps them with their masks. My point is, what is this stupid discussion about?!If one lowers himself to the level of gossip to get some attention it tells more about that person than about the subject, point final. ;-)

ok, i like slipknot. i tend to go for more melodious music, but i can't help it, i just like the stuff! i don't think they are talentless just because the tunes aren't beautiful. i play guitar,bass guitar,violin,piano and cello, so i know a thing or two about melodious instruments, but DUDE!one of my favorite bands is Coldplay, but when i'm seriously pissed off, i want the raging power-chords and tons of percussions to fuel my anger for the moment. no violent rampages for me, just a little screaming and fist-clenching:D

Ok I got about half-way through reading these posts and I just got bored of the same old sh*t. You people bitching about mallcore, where the hell do you buy your clothes at? Change the station or something if you're so "forced" to listen to whatever band is on the radio all the time. It annoys me when people do this kinda crap. If you don't like it, fine, but don't sit there and complain just cause you don't understand it. I would personally listen to "Wait and Bleed" over "Raining Blood" anyday. Now, I'm sure I'll get labeled as a poser or something, but I don't really care. If I like a song, I like it whether or not the band is mainstream or local. I agree with Poke Smot, it should be legalized. It's getting too dry around these parts. :-(

Some of you have good points and some of you just argue for the sake of it. Black Metal, Dark Metal, Death Metal. I see the reason for categories but that is ridiculous. Music of any sort conveys emotion and thought. Each person finds their own meaning in a song."OOH, but it doesnt contain solos, the musicians are incompetent,the drums suck, Slayer beats rule! You dont have to be a great musician to make great music and you metal-heads have this expectation that If the music isnt technically challenging, it is not real metal or good music. Thats guitarist talk and I hate it. How can you feel anything good listening to music when all you listen for is the technicality. I understand that is part of what makes metal metal but when you start to put paramaters on music you are not gonna enjoy much of it. As far as SlipKnot are concerned I like a few songs but I generally dont like their music. On a side note from the music, they act all brutal and heavy when they are not very groundbreaking. Korn set the standard in 94 and did something new and then in 99, Slipknot speed it up, add 4 more musicians, wear halloween masks all year round and then imply they are the anecdote to the woes of the music industry. Listen to Mate Feed Kill Repeat. They cant say they we doing this backin 96 . That album is not Slipknot today. I wonder what initiated such a change in direction for the band.? And as far as being sell-outs, when you can buy your own slipknot jumpsuit uniform for $50 it seems like they dont have much artistic merit when they let their merchandising rights be exploited like that!It feels like i'm watching the home shopping network trying to sell me some useless commemorative plates. And when a middle class man in his early thirties wants to "slit your throat and f*ck the wound" you wonder if someone who was genuinely that angry would actually write something like that. Probably not. I feel Corey is tailoring the music to the angt ridden 15 year olds. Listen to Slipknot if you like it but i dont and the politics of the band annoy me. This whole statment is oversimplifying but what can you do.

Sorry but yeah, Slipknot is as mainstream as it gets. It helps that they can't really play, as opposed to underground and foreign metal bands. Maybe I'd be able to take them seriously if the age of their fan base averaged at least 14 or above. By the way, not only did Kiss use studio musicians (and readily admit to this), but so has Aerosmith, even on their old stuff. Hysterical how we build these people up, when they're not even that great to begin with.

Just a random thought, not to point fingers or anything, but to be taken seriously and have your points highlited stronger, you might want to try a few things: 1. At least try to keep something that resembles semi-proper grammar! It can make one seem like they don't know how to make a point, let alone type it out. 2. Avoid derrogatory insults. At least from my perspective, there are probably at least a couple dozen words or phrases that could replace the last word in the sentance "That band is so gay." (A note on that word as well, there are plenty of gay metalheads out there, so don't use a minor facet of one's personality as an insult.) If you say something along the lines of "That band needs lessons in their instruments before being let into the studio again." or "That band can be outplayed by beginners" (provided that it's possible) (I've found) are much more effective. I don't care if you completely disreguard these two bits, but I just felt like tossing this out onto the table.

I listen to Iced Earth, Sentenced, Hatebreed, Lamb of God, Slayer, At the Gates and a lot more but I think Slipknot is actually heavier then all of them... They're more headbangable at least.. When music gets too complex its not as fun to listen to, in my opinion. So, yeah, thats what I think. Also ritalin umm when you say "gay pale white" kids.. do you realize that white kids can't help their skin color anymore then black people? if you had said "gay dark black kids" you would have definitely been reprimanded. anyhow those are my unrelated points.

Slipknot by no means can be called a good metal band. Sauren Caerthai has said it all, though I know some Slipknot fans will keep on yelling 'Slipknot is good metal' or something similar to that effect. I just can't agree to that. It's a lousy band & that's that. I might even go a bit over & say they're ruining the image of metal. Metal is highly intense, technique driven music that's hard, heavy & over the edge. Now with the advent of nu-metal acts as well as Slipknot, every metal band is considered by non-metal listening audience as the hybrid of Slipknot & Linkin Park & Limp Bizkit. I'm sorry, but that's hardly metal. I might even include SLIPKNOT in metal categories (though they can only be categorized in hardcore/grindcore/mallcore/rapcore because heavy metal/black/death/goth metal are just not ready to accept them. And they sure as hell aren't ingenius enough to create a new sub-category in metal. U listen to DIMENSION ZERO, ROTTING CHRIST, SHADOWSFALL & ARCH ENEMY and they pretty much would make Slipknot sound like Papa Roach on steroids. (hmmm I couldn't think of a better example). There's hell of so much better metal out there.
