Tyler Hilton - Indian Summer

by Kevin Wierzbicki

.
Yes this is the same Tyler Hilton who starred as Chris Keller on TV's One Tree Hill and who also got the plum part of playing Elvis Presley in the Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line. So obviously Hilton is no beginner (this is actually his sophomore release) and here on this set of Americana-leaning pop he sounds extremely seasoned, portraying a world weariness on the yearning "One More Song," joyously remembering seasonal good times in "Give Me That Summer" and showing a little Dylan love on the acoustic guitar-and-harmonica driven "California." Hilton has a little bit of roughness to his voice that sometimes recalls Steve Earle, noticeable especially on songs like "Just Might Be Tonight" where he drawls a little even though he's a California boy. "Only Ones Left in the World" uncharacteristically begins with orchestration, a technique that adds a melancholy feeling to the song of adoration for a lover, and generous use of weepy fiddles heighten the mood. There are banjo and mandolin parts aplenty on Indian Summer too and many will think of the effort as a country album but more specifically it is a pop album and a very good one at that.

Buy the album on iTunes here or at Tyler's official store here.
