Adley Stump - Like This (Deluxe)

Country music fans first got to know Stump when she appeared on season two of "The Voice," a venue that she fully took advantage of to launch a career that now, only a few short years later, is really hitting pay dirt. Having moved from her native Oklahoma to country music capital Nashville, Stump has quickly become accepted by the city's vaunted musical community, including songwriters like Andy Adamson, Billy Dawson and Chad Raymon who she co-penned the bulk of Like This (Deluxe) with. The album has already yielded a hit single, the seriously-themed "Stay at Home Soldier," a blunt look at what it's like to be the homebound wife of a military man who's dodging bullets in a war zone. Written with Raymon, Dawson and the late Rob Bironas, the somber song, made all the more ominous with eerie slide guitar parts, nevertheless has a great hook that calls for a sing-along of the lines "And it makes me proud/Makes me that much bolder/To say that I'm a stay at home soldier." Other highlights of the album find Stump having fun though; the rowdy banjo-infused "Little Black Dress" finds her out on the town in her 5" heels and the title cut, a rock-y dance-oriented stomper, is also a going-out-on-the-prowl tune full of bragging vocals that makes for a perfect theme song for the girls who fancy themselves the hottest in the joint. There's a little romantic sadness here too in the form of "Fall" and "Walkin Away," and with these Stump proves she is as adept at tugging at the heartstrings as she is at starting a party. A cover of Leonard Cohen's well-traveled "Hallelujah" rounds out this impressive effort from a rising talent destined to shorty be a household name.
