Cindy Wilson - Change

by Kevin Wierzbicki

Wilson is a member of the long-running and still active quirky Athens, Georgia band the B-52's, but fans should not expect a B-52's-ish album here. Whereas the music of the B-52's generally is intended to get people moving, Wilson is in a much more relaxed mood here on her first solo album which begins with a sublime chill-out cut called "People Are Asking." And while Cindy is mellow throughout, there's still music geared to the dance floor, like the airy groove that is "Stand Back Time" and the slow dance that is "Sunrise." Cuts that hint at Wilson's new wave history include the psych rock of "Brother" and "Mystic," although the latter sounds more influenced by Gary Numan than the B-52's. The title cut is basically an instrumental although Wilson does seductively coo "change…" over the music bed. All in all Change offers a great opportunity to hear Wilson's voice in a delicate mode, occasionally also veering into more of a pop direction as she does with an outstanding cover of "Things I'd Like to Say" which was originally done by the New Colony Six in 1968. It's not often that an album can be summed up in three words or with a common adage, but here it is quite appropriate to simply say "Change is good."
