Kelly Frank, the 43-year-old former employee of Letterman has been charged with felony solicitation to kidnap, felony theft for allegedly overcharging Letterman for maintenance work on the Choteau ranch and a misdemeanor count of obstruction for lying to an FBI agent during an initial interview.
Frank reportedly planned to take Letterman's 16-month old son in hopes of obtaining a $5 million ransom. The nanny would also be kidnapped to look after the child.
Frank's fiancée said that he was set up. Laurie Johnson told the New York Daily News and New York Post that Frank had been falsely accused by a childhood friend he had a falling out with. Johnson said that this friend had a "personal vendetta" against Frank over a fight they had had at work and that the man has been trying to incriminate Frank ever since.
Frank reportedly made a remark about Letterman needing to increase security at his ranch. Johnson said that the estranged friend twisted those comments around and went to authorities with the alleged kidnap plot.
Frank is currently on probation for stalking and intimidating a woman who alleges he also kidnapped and raped her. He pleaded guilty to the charges and received a 10-year suspended prison sentence. Authorities have petitioned a judge to revoke the suspended sentencing following the arrest this week.
Frank is currently being held on $600,000
bail.
