The classic rock artist revealed he was fighting the disease in October, when he vowed to win the battle, saying: "The cancer is treatable and I'll be walking out of this hospital in three to four weeks. I'll be able to go on the road and continue my rock'n'roll life in due time. I'll be back with you soon." In October he told of his astonishment and gratitude after a Japanese fan sold his guitar and donated the money to the cancer fund. The board of the Ronnie James Dio Cancer Fund were among a number of music industry bodies who also helped. On New Year's Night members of Queensryche, Heaven and Hell, Dokken and Ratt gathered to perform a benefit concert at the Avalon in Santa Clara, California.
