(Radio.com) Bruno Mars is gearing up for his Super Bowl debut this Sunday (Feb. 2) with the Red Hot Chili Peppers. In a press conference held on Thursday (Jan. 30) in New York, Mars dodged questions about the surprises he has in store during his set, but he did reveal just why he chose RHCP to share the stage. During the press conference, it was also announced that Phil Simms, MVP for the New York Giants Super Bowl XXI, and Broadway Joe Namath, MVP for the New York Jets Super Bowl III, will lead the coin toss.

Mars said he watched Beyonc's Super Bowl Halftime Show last year and thought to himself, "'Man, what if one day we get the call to do that?'" While he said the call came sooner than he thought, he's honored to take the stage. "Some greats have been on that stage and we're just excited that we've been given a shot," he said.

Mars said he knew he wanted the Red Hot Chili Peppers to join him during the performance when the NFL said he could have another artist play with him. "The first name that I thought of was Red Hot Chili Peppers. I've been a fan of theirs for such a long time. I've admired their career," he said. "They're just a soulful band. And not just musically, but as people. I sat down with Flea and he's so passionate with music. Even till this day, after doing it for so long he's still so passionate about creating music and performing. I want to surround myself with guys like that forever. It's an honor to be sharing the stage with them. They're one of my personal favorite bands of all time. I'm excited for that." more on this story
