Singled Out: Rikity's Black Limousine
. I wrote a song for my comedy/dance band "The Funky Knights" in the 90s called "Black Limousine". It was, like lots of our songs, raunchy, sexy and funny. The chorus always sounded like a hit to me, so after that band went on sabbatical, I considered if for Rickity. Rickity has a lot of sexy songs, but the silly quality wouldn't fit with us. I jammed on the idea with Rickity and all of a sudden it took on a dark, urban sultriness. I went a little overboard with the poetic eroticism of the lyrics, which seemed to fit the slow funk crawl of the main riff. Our first jam seemed magical and I was grateful that we had recorded it on multi-track. Neil's uncharacteristically restrained drum part was almost flawless, so we started testing overdubs as our first cd progressed. Many months went by and we tinkered with "Black Limousine" as we completed 2 cds worth of songs in the studio. I don't think anyone thought the song was a contender for our cd. Even though we rehearsed two hours of music, we never even bothered to learn the song. When Paul and Perrita finally nailed their vocals, all of a sudden there it was! Everyone acknowledged we had a one of a kind little gem.I think we were a little intimidated to attempt to play it live, but it fell into place easily. It doesn't sound like anything like any of our other songs. The version on the cd was completed before we had even attempted to play it live. Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album right here!
