Singled Out: Vinnie Vegas' Rubber Sternum
. The song Rubber Sternum was one of the more artistic endeavors on the record. The end of the track especially, allowed us all to experiment with texture and unique tones that we hadn't utilized elsewhere on the album. We layered about 6 guitar tracks, multiple saxophone tracks, a music box, Rhodes, and Jason (Drums) even recorded himself dropping loose screws onto a bigger pile of screws for added texture. Lyrically this song follows a similar stream of consciousness approach as the music. I was thinking a lot about anxiety, and things in my life that have held me back from experiencing things. Fear of failure basically. As we were writing this song, a friend sent me a Miles Davis quote, "Do not fear mistakes, there are none". This really hit home and got me thinking of how all of your failures and mistakes are only a part of who you are, and instead of fearing them, they should be embraced. I would think about taking in all of the good and the bad that makes me up, and get this vision of breathing deep and the physical feeling of my chest expanding to take in the air. This is where the track's title comes from, "Can we be without flaws? Never to find our greener hearts, wider ribs, rubber sternums". Hearing is believing.
